I adopted the "Wrench, Wheel, Wreck, Repeat" mantra quite some time ago, as I do feel it defines us gearheads. Heck, it's not even limited to go kart gearheads either. That's just how it is when you turn your own wrench. We are in a constant state of building, modification or repair. No- the intent is not "let's crash our junk into a wall and start over again". However- we are what we are. Since we do NOT drop high dollars on shiny crap and when it DOES break, throw it out and buy new again, we often find ourselves wrenching away. Be it on something we've homebrewed, or a proof-of-concept we're shaking the bugs out of, or our next modification.
My most recent example of this might be one of my other side hobbies, modified lawn tractors. Some of you might be aware of the
MULE project. I built it up (Wrench) and use it quite alot for work and for play (Wheel). Recently, I was offroading and accidentally shattered the transaxle housing (Wreck). So, I bought a junk transaxle housing, stuffed it full of good gears from my broken housing, and away I went again (Repeat!). Furthermore- along the way, I have discovered MULE's weaknesses and can address some of them directly, like fabricating a steel transaxle truss that counters the torsional force that broke the prior one. In addition, I have begun building MULEII, a similarly-focused machine that will entirely negate several weak points of MULE, by eliminating them entirely.
THIS is the sort of thing that "Wrench, Wheel, Wreck, Repeat" represents, and any true gearhead can certainly not only understand the concept, but dammit- we're PROUD of it too! I'm not some drip in a beemer on the side of the road waiting for AAA because I'm out of wiper fluid! I'm the guy that changed out a bad fuel pump in a mall parking lot all those years ago with nothing but a couple tools and my wits! My name is Chris, and I am proud gearhead!
Can I get an "amen"?
