So..problem.

The very end of my axle seems to be messed up and the axle nut will not go on.

How can I fix this cheap and easy? I don't want to buy a new axle... can I try to cut some of the end off? or will that damage more threads...

thanks

A die might work, but you'd be cutting brand new threads at the very end, that might (or might not) corectly sync up with the good remaining threads further inboard... A better option might be to use a (corect size) thread file, like these: http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4DMUS_enUS221US222&q=Thread+file

can I try to cut some of the end off? or will that damage more threads...

Was it damaged from cross threading?
How far in are the threads actualy damaged?

If you deside to cut... Look at your axles good side to see how much of the threads/axle stick on through past the nut. That will tell you how much of the damaged sides threads you could cut off if necessary.

As far as actualy cutting it goes, A 4" Mikita type grinder (with the corect metal cutting type disks) would probably do a nice clean job.

Another more ghetto cutting method would be blocking the karts rear end safely up off the ground, then running the engine set to fast idle, that would be turning the axle, while you carefully held a good hack saw, that would be cleanly cutting only the damaged portion off.

After cutting, you might find your (new???) axle nut still wont easly start and thread on. You might find you have to just very lightly file the very outer edge of the the axles threads to get your new nut to corectly start without stripping.

Good luck man... I'm pullin for ya.

It was only the very first thread or two. I'm thinking I may have dropped it or hit it with something. The nut can't get started.

That doesn't sound to bad then. Using either a thread file or a die should fix that right up. You might even be able to use a small triangle shaped file to clean up the damaged threads a bit. Make sure you havent damaged the nut trying to install it on those bad threads...
(posting a good close-up pic of the damaged threads might trigger someone to come up with a better suggestion)

Go with a file first and if that doesn't work you're gona have to by a die but you're in luck there not that exspensive if you only buy one. Just make sure you have some one who knows what there doing help you decide which one is the correct size.

Imagine a guy in a very small shop trying to grind an axle on an enclosed wheel grinder buried in a corner between a drill press and two benches. That's how I fixed mine.

Sounds about like my shop... ;)
I'm totally picturing that in my mind, but I was wondering if the axle was still mounted in the kart or not?

hi if you have a spare nut try this has wroked for me in the past.
cut the nut in half i.e looking down through the hole make sure you do it point to point of the hex clean off any burs then put the two halfs around the thread of the shaft past the worn end,
MAKE SURE YOU LINE THE NUT UP PROPERLY ON THE THREAD clamp the two halfs of the nut together tight (a pair of mole grips should do the trick) then wind it off the shaft back and forth as you go this should restore the thread to a useable state. using a die is a good idea but you run the risk of the thread going out of line if you dont start the thread in the right place you have to be carefull what ever you do :) good luck

No, I had it out for straightening with the (conveniently buried behind a 67 Camaro that hasn't moved in 20 years) 20 ton press and dropped it on the floor.
