Stihl chainsaw runs like crap

i put the exhaust back on,

it idles now, very low and stalls sometimes. at WOT it runs about half speed.... so improvement but still needs to go full.

you cant cut a log at half throttle.

i have a drawer with a bunch of carbs, mostly zama's, ill see if one fits, or just swap the diaphrams.


should i tell him to buy me a carb rebuild kit?

Take apart the one that's on the saw, look at the diaphragm, and check the lines and connections first. If the diaphragm is crispy or if you can see a crack in it with a magnifying glass, then you'll know for sure what to tell him.

I see that you have the air filter off. What would happen if you start the saw, open the throttle, and drop gas in the intake with an eye dropper or a piece of fuel line? If you put several drops in and the engine speeds up, then you know that fuel delivery is the issue, for whatever reason.

i will try dropping some gas in while its running.

thank god the carb is facing up, that makes it easier!

i did try this earlier, but it had the screen blocked in the exhaust. it didnt rev up, if i remember right it just got super rich.

i think it can rev a little higher.

i cant tell if its rich or lean, but its a PITA to tune the way those mixture screws are.

pissed off the neighbors probably at like 8:30 i ran it for 20 minutes straight... tuning...

Ya I watched the vid again. Sounds like it is breaking up at hi rpm's. What does your plug read?

as of today, i tried to use it to cut some small branches up... about an inch through a 2 inch branch and it wont cut anymore.... and it pours out smoke and the chain gets really hot.

i sharpened the chain with my dremel and it still smokes like crazy.

So you run the saw not knowing if it's lean?

Is the bar bent at all? Is the chain oiler working?

I have used a chainsaw many times. I studied forestry, and had did tree felling as holiday work. If your chain oiler is not working, you will get smoke and the bar will get really really hot. The smoke can look like it comes from the engine, but it is not really the engine smoking, it is the hot bar burning wood.

chain oilers working,,, i threw some used motor oil in there..... it was dry. wouldnt that be fine?

Motor oil isn't the same viscosity as chain oil. Even though it is not the right thing to use, it should have worked well enough for you to try it out. I would change it though to the real thing.

You said you dremel the chain? Saw chains need to be sharpend right? If not done right they will not cut anything. Or take forever to cut anything.

I tried to file a saw one time and made it worse. My friend sharpend the chain and it work like butter.

Yep you did way more than $10 work. I would till him to get a new chain though.

Do a plug chop and figure out why it is sucking that much gas. You are all most there man.

I would agree with the new chain. If not sharpened correctly, with a proper round file at the right angle (30 deg if I remember correctly) you can mess the chain up. Some power product stores will sharpen it for you for cheap as well.

you needa fine tune the hi speed screw by the sounds of it

hard to tell from video sounds tho

not sure but maybe it sounds like its around rich drop off

it could be a fuel flow issue aswel. For the 1 dollar it costs i would put in a new fuel filter

i have no idea to be honest but i can make my engines sound like that at wot if they're over rich or lean haha

i find when the chain is realy blunt its hard to get it proper sharp with a file. Usualy works best if you take the chain to the shop and get them to use their chain grinder thing. Then keep it sharp with a file like the one above after each time you use it

edit: and re pulling plug. Run it at wot for a bit then hit the kill switch

Blue. Go buy a cheap saw file. Watch some youtube vids on how to sharpen saw chains. I think you will be able to pick it up. If the guy buy a new chain you can practice on the old one.

So what else does this old guy got laying around? I have a photo in my head that this is an old grampa type ex farmer that has everything. The type of gramps that has shelfs and shelfs of nuts,bolts and screw bins. A bunch of out buildings with stuff scattered.

I love finding estate sales like this. But when I looking thru an old guys nut bins and stuff. You think this is a life time of stuff. The family is selling his tools pennies on the dollar. I know the old guy is rolling in his grave. But at the same time this is how I beef up my tools along with nuts and bolts collections you may have seen.
