Stihl chainsaw runs like crap

Blowen head gasket !!!

It wont have a head gasket as we no one. It will probably have a single piece barrel, so it will just have a base gasket. Have a look at the crank seals and plug to see if it is running lean.

One other thing I have see is that the bolts holding the barrel come loose. The chainsaw would run okay at high revs up wouldn't idle. Just another simple thing to check.

well you might want to make sure the right oil mix because this could cause some problems especially the smoke. probably not but just eliminate all posibilities.

Maybe real live got in the way. Some people have other things to do..

Sure, you may think Russ was being a pain, but all he is trying to do, is make us think. I hope know one expects them to be spoon feed their whole lives. Who's to say Russ is correct? He maybe way off. For each symptom there can be multiple solutions.

iduno i disscounted the smoke. i figured his crankcase was a little full of oil from running at low rpm and that it would clear once he got it up to wot for 20 seconds.

who cares its America. Buy a new one

Is it, check the automatic transmission fluid level ?

If it was in my possession, it would be on the wash bench, in a million bits, they are really not that complicated.

Blue, I just remembered we had a couple stihl chain saws that developed cracks in the (rubber/plastic?) intake manifold that caused some bizarre symtoms until we finally discovered this. We got away with cleaning/coating them with silicone for awhile but eventually had to special-order/replaced them.

Also add: making dam sure you've got some fresh/correct premix without any water/condensation in it to my list of suggestions.

Could it be something to do with water? Like water in the fuel?

well im super busy (studying for finals...UGH) but ill be able to check on it soon.

first thing ill do is try to clean the exhaust and check it for blockage.

then ill go write a list on everything ^^^^^ and go down it checking things off.



as for my $10, i guess im a pretty hard worker, well i work hard for money.... trying to get as much as possible too..... maybe ill ask a little more if i feel.....


im saving up for this and a torque converter.

Hay cam, I've got a few of those mac engines (well they look the same anyway, I'l check the model), if you need any parts you can have them for the cost of postage.

i love how these are actual METAL, not plastic!!!! engines and plastic dont mix too well!!

EDIT: might call him and say, it probably will take forever to get to run right, how bout i restore/ clean it up?

he might say well obviously he wont pay $100 bucks when you can go to home depot and grab a new one.


he told me earlier if its not worth my time, throw it out. well i would restore it then......



its not in too bad condition. paints almost all there...

BTW, cam, im buying a new crankshaft because shipping alone would just about cost the same as a brand new crank.

That's more or less how I procured my MacCulloch chainsaw. A woman I do some handyman-type work for described the problem, which I diagnosed as a fragged clutch. Examining it verified that. When I suggested repair costs, she told me it wasn't worth it and I could have it if I wanted. I dragged it home and tore into it. The clutch parts basically fell out. By coincidence, I had an older Mac laying around, and luck of all luck, the clutch was a direct fit. The saw's a beauty, and runs like a champion... Gawd I love free stuff!
