I have a stihl 038 chainsaw engine which seems to have good compression, cleaned out the carb and am pretty sure it will have no problem running. Stripped off all the plastics and was thinking about mounting it on a little trike or mini bike with just a simple centr clutch. Not sure if its a 038 normal or super but i know the norm 038 is a 60cc and makes four horse. Wondering if it will push around a light trike frame and will i be able to pick up a new centr clutch with a sprocket i can mount on it. I have the old clutch but not the bell housing. Wish i had all the orig parts but someone threw everything but the engine away when i cleaned the carb out a year ago with out asking me :censored: . Any thoughts, ideas, insight?

Thanks, George

I put a echo 40 cc chainsaw motor in a bike with a jack-shaft and perfect gearing i hit 34.3 MPH. Its was a steel 20 inch bike frame with 16 inch bike tires for better gearing. i weigh 125 pounds and the bike as you can imagine with a little extra steel, the engine, 2 48 tooth #40 chain sprockets, 2 12 tooth #40 sprockets, some chain, and another bike crank for the jack shaft. It was not extremely heavy but it was not light at all. You should be able to pull it off no problem

hey investigate if those chinese motorised bike kits, use the same size clutch drum as your clutch. I think they have a reduction box type thing which includes the clutch drum and you can buy it for next to nothing

yeah was not thrilled, think the jack shaft is necessary jake? and where/how could i find a cent clutch to go on this saw with matching hardware? Question number two is think i should do a full suspension trike? Forks in the front and a mono in the back?? Still not sure if i want to make a street trike or a multi purpose off road trike.... I was thinking have rear end of trike with motor on a swivel, then mono on the frame so i guess the engine would bump around alot, but the driver wouldn't.

the part i guess im stuck on is if i want to do street/ or dirt cause a street cart would just use cart slicks which are pretty small would not be much sprocket clearance.

I had a jack-shaft installed because i needed a 16:1 ratio and as you can imagine that is hard with only 2 sprockets. For the clutch maybe a used one on eBay. the engine i had was complete and with its clutch it runs great. For the jack-shaft i just cut a crank out of a cheap old bike and bended the petal bar coming out until it was strait and used that by welding it in position.

is it possible to achieve any kind of low end torque with this 60 cc two stroke? and what top speeds could you get out of it if you had right sprocket config? i mean a kx or yz 60 move. just curious i guess. Ran the motor today think i need to adjust the carb wouldnt idle.....

http://motoredbikes.com/ for all your questions. I have a 30cc trimmer engine with a 35cc saw carb mounted on an old schwinn at a 12:1 ratio and I weigh 175... It's all about gearing, how fast you want to go, how much you want to "assist pedal", and how creative you are at building.

talked to a friend he has one actually, also asked him about having one solid axle to move both wheels on my trike and he said it isnt good for turning? like one holds back the other or something, he right?

Yeah, however 99% of karts that drive both rear wheels have a solid axle. You should manage with your trike.

the deal with a solid axle is that when turning the inside tire spins faster due to shorter distance....sometimes the axle will bind but that usually only occurs when heavy power is applied when turning...and the inside tire will usually spin before any axle damage happens...to give an example have you ever seen a car turning right and the tire closest to the curb burns out?? that is because the distince to travel for the left tire is farther than the right tire so the right tire has to spin to maintain the same speed...that is why the limited slip differential was created
