Steering questions

Is this the correct set up for my kart? It looks like the manual I downloaded, but dang it goes quite a bit below the frame. Is there a way to get it above the frame?

I thought about flipping the Pittman arm (#50) so the tab is not at the end of the steering shaft. But then the holes done line up. I tried flipping the Pittman arm point up above the A-Arm but then the angles of the tie rod ends connecting to the Pittman arm are bad.

Also, when I got the kart the Pittman arm was all bent to heck. I'm thinking I should get a gusset welded on so it won't bend again, but there should be a weak spot somewhere easier to fix, right? Like if the Pittman arm is rock solid it will mess up something else that would be more difficult to fix. Am I not understanding something?

Hey Cartinfun, looking at how your tie-rods hang below the frame doesn't seem right. I think you have a Yerf-Dog. I just happen to be working on mine so l went out into the garage to see what the difference is because mine sit above the frame. I don't know the proper name of the part but it is the flat piece coming off the back of the spindle, the part your tie-rods bolt into. Yours are flat and mine are stepped. They come back about 1.5" rise 90 degrees 1.5" and
then another 90 degree bend back 1.5" or so. I am a technical KLUTZ and don't know how to post a picture, but I think you get the idea. A backward square S shape. They don't look like custom or home made. Pretty sure they are factory. Never gave them much thought until comparing to yours. Hopefully you can find them somewhere.

Is the circled part what you are talking about that is bent on yours?

I think that's possibly an improvement on your Yerf Dog over mine. This doesn't look damaged and that's how it appears in the manual.

Yes it is the part you circled. As suggested by MWKarter I probably have a different model. Mine is a 30023 and when I look on the web page, even though the picture is small I can see that they are stepped. As Denny said, a shield would probably be easier then finding and BUYING new spindles.

Ok cool, question solved. Kinda poor design from manufacturer. I guess after I get it all done I will look at it again and see if I want to build a skid plate.
