Hello i recently got a lawn tractor that had a bad engine. I put another engine on it and it was working. decided to do a pulley swap for a little more speed as i was doing that i decided to make a new clutch, then i saw that the turning mechanism was garbage, it was all bad so i cut the gears off and started to do a new design but now i'm stuck. The one i tried didn't work(pics below). Can someone please give me advice or if you know how to do it let me know please, Thanks.

well it looks like you had a rack/pinion setup originally..
and now the lever isn't actually a good replacement for that.

here's an exploded view of a similar rack/pinion system of some (other?) yard machine:

as you can see the end of the steering shaft should have a pinion driving this gear:


I hope that helps at least a bit ;)

I'm pretty confident to assume your's was just like that originally.
