steering conundrum

Hi all quick question I am building a suspended kart and I can get hold of a mark 2 fiesta steering rack column and wheel for nothing can I cut it down after the rack to suit or should I just go tie rod and pitman arm??? Cheers guys dave.

So what do you all think rack and pinion or tie rods??? Can you put tie rods on a suspended kart???
