i'm going to get steel for a project and was reading up on local steel distributers and found a possible source. i was looking at their pricing sheet and was suddenly curious as to what the "selling price" in the sheet goes by. is it by ft. or lbs. or something else? the sheet can be found here: https://www.ipaco.biz/price/RM.pdf

well closest to real world values IMHO is per feet

That's because of the volatility of the price of steel.. In N.America tariffs have put the prices in the upheaval, so the price can change from day to day..

I'd call a couple local steel suppliers and ask for quotes. When I built a frame in high school, I called a couple big steel places and got quotes for costs. Some may even cut the steel for you at the angles you need, so do it for free some may charge a small fee.

Every time I buy, its by the foot. Obviously .120 wall will be more by the foot than .065. If you have a metal supermarkets by you, use the cost calculator on onlinemetals. I have found the price of online metals to be almost the same price as metal supermarkets.

Most if the steel I buy to keep in my inventory is off the drops rack at my local steel yard. Odd lengths especially. I bought a whole bundle of 1"x1/8" wall square tube a while back... All 9 foot lengths left over from a customer who ordered a bunch of 15 footers (cut from 24 footers) and didn't want the drops. I got like 40 sticks for less than half price.

JS.

I was actually referring to Canada and Mexico... As I recall America imports most of there steel and aluminum from here(Canada).. Hence the 25% on steel..
Still to remain for now under NAFTA2 or now called USMCA....
But... Ah hem.... Sorry... That's politics... I'll stop...

I've seen prices by the pound and per foot. Might be that way for certain items but it could go either way.
