Hey, I'm starting to build a frame to a 2 person off road go kart. Will 1in by 1in by .083in by strong enough?

I can't directly answer your question being I have no engineering background... but I am building a 2 person road cart and am very pleased with the larger tubing. For a bigger cart it has a more proportionate look. I'm using 2x2 with a mix of 1.5x1.5, so in my opinion, have you considered using 1.5" square? Some one suggested to me when I first started that I use larger tubing, and in doing so I could use thinner wall. I never researched it... but if you call your supplier they typically have engineers to answer questions on strength. Food for thought. Happy building!

I hadn't though about using wider steel with a thiner thickness. I was thinking of using 1/8in or something like that for the main frame and then using the .083 for the rest. A friend of main suggested using open angle pieces, the 2 sided things, and welding those onto the main frame if it wasn't strong enough but that doesn't seem very cost effective.

They're are pretty cheap. It may take some retrofitting but they look nice. Double check the welds if you get them as China parts (that's where I'm guessing they're from) aren't always crafted with care.

I got the steel and am working on the frame, I don't know how to upload the design. I am using 1 x 1 x 1/8 in steel. I am trying to figure out where to buy the other parts, mostly tires, any ideas? I also want to put disk brakes on the front, has anyone done this themselves before? I thought about mounting them to the rim because the spindle isn't turning but I don't really know.

See if you can find a parts quad with front brakes as this would give both tires and brakes.

I think I'd build the side rails in a ladder type configuration if it's a 2 seater off road with a powerful bike engine on it. If you went with a ladder type side rail 1" sq would be strong enough. i don't think it would be without some major triangulation.

Everything you ever wanted and then some.

IMHO front brakes are overkill unless youre racing or just hauling a**. A rear disc on a live axle should be plenty and they are MUCH cheaper than going with fronts.
