Right! I now have finished what I believe I will need to build my own Victa powered go kart.

my kart so far, just a chalk drawing with a seat, wheels, steering wheels and engine (engine is sitting around the wrong way i know, I don't have a rattle gun on hand to undo the rusty engine studs keeping the engine on that dreadful stand!

I'm going to cut off the intake tube on the engine, and make my own intake manifold to mount my carby. and hopefully port the intake so it is the same size as the carb as well as take the sharp angles out of the ports. i will be running a stock exhaust as Victas are the loudest engines on earth, and they will happily remove your eardrums through your nostrils. so I want to keep it as quiet as possible.

and something else I just finished (motorized drift trike)
check it out in another thread (please don't laugh at my lack of building skill) --> http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/showthread.php?t=21721&highlight=drift+trike

Two things:
1. You'll need to move your front wheels back or extend the steering shaft or both unless you plan on having steering arms a foot long...
2. instead of going to all the trouble of fabbing an intake tube, why not simply stand the engine up...

Another engine suggestion:

You mentioned the exhaust, Have you tried to find a "Torpedo" muffler?

These were used on older mk1 Victa's eg: Cortina. They get their name from the shape and fasten on with an exhaust clamp. It can be rotated any direction, depending on how your engine is positioned.

Performance-wise they are a better option than the newer "box" type clip on muffler.

They are becoming hard to find, but they are still out there.

If you're not sure what they look like, let me know and I will take a photo of mine.

even if i was to stand up the engine i would have to make an adapter. but since the chainsaw card doesn't have a float and uses a pump to scavenge fuel, so it can be mounted anywhere at any point.

also, the pull starter for the engine is on the bottom of the engine so i either have to mount it ridiculously high or not have any access to the pull starter.

I will be making my own steering shaft. also, what distance should I have the front wheels from the end of the frame if its 1500mm long?

Is a kart 1.5m gonna be long enough for you?

150mm wheel centres in from each end (front & rear) should be enough

I believe it might be, I have sat in a comfortable position and drew from there. it just so happened to end up 1,500mm. should I rethink this before I start? I don't want to get to the end of the build and go to ride it and realise I'm too big for it.
