I'm 40 yrs old, and bought an old Manco chassis one night on E-bay because I was pizzed that I never had a go-kart as a kid.
I've had this thing sitting for three years and moved it from Kentucky to Arizona where I now live.
I've had all the pieces for at least two years, and finally put it all together over the past three weekends.
I've got a 6.5 hp motor from Harbor Freight that is actually running great!!!
I live at the end of a dirt road, and with just the single drive wheel (left) it gets squirelly when the gravel is loose (which is when it gets fun!).
I've seen 29.5 GPS on it on the pavement.
Problem I'm having is it will stall if I go into hard turns on loose gravel (doing donuts), mainly if I'm turning clockwise, doesn't seem to stall if turning counter-clockwise. It fires right back up on the first pull after a stall.
Getting the azz end loose and doing donuts is whats fun about this thing - but not if it stalls everytime.
Anything I can do to correct this?
Also, what can I do for more speed in this package?
Almost seems like I'm hitting a rev-limiter.
Any help is appreciated.
I'm just an old guy playing around out in the desert and trying to kick up some dust.

You might have to get a lower gear ratio. For this problem you might have to suffer some speed for power. It sounds like your engine is getting to the point where its barely spinning which in return it will stall. By putting a lower gear it gives you more power and your wheels will spin instead of your engine stalling. Or another solution is if you want to keep the same-higher speed get an engine a little bigger. For example instead of 6.5 hp jump up to 8hp. I hope that helps.

Does it bog down and stall, or sputter and stall.. My best guess is that centrifugal force is pulling the fuel away from the pick up. This is why it dies one way but not the other.

Just my .02.

Stalling = Oil sensor? Mine did exactly the same thing until I disconnected.

"Rev-limiter" = Governor? Run it in for a while then read up on how to remove that.

It's your low oil switch inside the moter. Cut the yellow wire coming out of the engine case and your problems will be solved.

When you go around a corner all the oil goes to one side and triggers the low oil sensor.

Wow!!! I'm shocked at all the good responses to a newbie - this must be a good forum.
I'm usually on HP Offshore boat forums (my main hobby).

Also can you tell me how many teeth on the sprocket and axle you have.
It's just a stock Manco drive gear with a 12 tooth clutch (brand new - maybe one hour on it now).
As far as an axle, it's just direct drive to the left rear wheel, which is just a drive gear on bearings on the firm spindle.

I'm thinking a fuel issue also. It just flat out dies. Not a sputter, not bogging... Just dies. And then fires right back up when I pull the cord.

Sounds like fuel starvation to me. The clutch would disengage if rpms dropped to the point of stalling, wouldn't it?

wait. do you have the oil sensor disconnected?

Oil Sensor??

Called a governor. All utility engines have them...for good reason.
I'm used to HP Offshore boats - we call them rev-limiters - when the props are out of the water (jumping waves) they are used to protect the engines from over reving with no resistance.
Governor vs. Rev limiter, same smell.

I appreciate all the responses and conversation!!:cheers2:

Sounds like oil sensor it is - I didn't think this little motor was complicated enough to have an oil sensor.
So much for spending my July 4 holiday on the sofa, I'll be farting around with the go kart untile I get this figured out.
Thanks for the help fella's - I'll keep ya'll posted.
Drinks on the house...
