Hi,

I am restoring a Margay Cheetah. I have a new 6.5 hp motor.
Not quite sure what size sprocket and clutch to use. I plan on using 11.5"od knobby tires, disc brakes. Would a 12 tooth clutch gear and a 60 tooth sprocket be a good combination? Or would a 71 tooth be better.

Thanks for any advice.

Regards,

Dan

Either one could be a good choice, it comes down to being a compromise and your choice between wanting higher top speeds or better acceleration.

Assuming your engines Governor is still intact limiting RPM to 3600, you should end up with a 25 MPH top speed with a 60 tooth, or 21 MPH with slightly better acceleration using a 71 tooth.

For riding on a large hard/flat/paved area where the highest top speed is wanted I'd choose the 60 or even a smaller size. For off road type use (or riding in a small area like the average back yard for example) where better acceleration would be more important I'd go with the 71 or maybe even larger sprocket and/or possibly a 10 tooth clutch.

Your weight could also be a determining factor.

Here's a link to a gearing calculator you could figure other gearing combinations: http://www.diygokarts.com/speed-calculator.html
