Sprocket help!

How do I go about getting this sprocket to move? I need to move it away from the motor to get a torque converter on. I have tried to slide it off and take the key out and neither are working.

The thing is obviously rust-welded on. Rust makes metal expand by adding a layer of itself (oxidation) to the metal’s inside and/or outside diameter.

Penetrating fluid, heat, big and bigger hammers are your friends here. And when you get the thing off, clean the rust, polish both pieces and add a layer of grease or antiseize to prevent this from happening again (help the next fella down the line).

that sprocket is worn out. notice the hooked teeth? not good! heat the hub with a torch get it off and replace both sprockets and the chain and live happily ever after!

So it should slide right off the key? I thought so, but I have seen other people have to do other things to get it off. Like screw screws into the hub to pull it off.

Clean the side of the axle where you are trying to move the sprocket holder to. Wire wheel it, emory cloth, sand paper, steel wool, etc so you won’t be fighting it the entire way due to the friction from trying to slide it over a rusty, dirty, pitted axle. The key is a source of friction too, so I usually tap out the key from the keyway first. Use a pin punch of the appropriate size.

When you’re hammering it, try to protect the sprocket and holder from the hammer blows with a piece of wood. This spreads the force and adds a “cushion” between the hammer and the part.

Master Hack is right! The sprocket itself its pretty gosh darn worn out. Luckily the sprocket holder itself can be kept.

Don't worry about saving the sprocket. It was worn out a LONG time ago. Save the hub if you can by using a scrap piece of 2 X 4 between the hub and a very large hammer.

Might be easier to apply force if you can get the axle ( the whole shebang ) off of the kart. Pull the motor, pull the wheels, pull the bearings. What ever it takes.
