The only speedos made for karts are Michrons which are $300. A bike speedometer can be adapted easily.

Works flawlessly. Quite accurate once correctly calibrated, even holds max speed attained so you can keep you eyes on the road and still know your peak speed. Also serves as an odometer. Was quite easy to adapt installation and programming for kart use.

Toystory, I was meaning to ask you, how smoothly does the speed change? Does it give you a reading every second, half second..? I had a tachometer that was electronically similar to this type of device (uses the same type of sensor), and it only gave me a reading every half second or so.

I know that these types of speedos are not as smooth as car ones, but I was wondering if they were better than a half second.

I'd have to guess 1/4 to 1/3 second. It's nice having a constant sweep, but this updates quickly enough for my purposes. I set it up for performance tweaking. I need to know top speed, and how long it takes to get there. For this, it's more than sufficient. Let's face it, I'm not racing.

toystory is there an alternative to drilling through my sprocket? This seems like a cool project but I just don't wana put a hole through my sprocket. And yes I know it won't damage it.

Given the fact that the magnet I installed in my sprocket is, well- a magnet, I would imagine that a similar magnet mounted to the sprocket and passing at a similar distance will do. If you glue one on, clean the sprocket surface with a heavy duty solvent like acetone, and bond the magnet with 5 minute epoxy glue. That oughta hold it.

I drilled thru my sprocket out of simplicity. The magnet came in a cylindrical housing, so mounting it the way I did absolutely guaranteed it wouldn't come off.

We had an exercise bike with a speedo on it when I was a kid . I always wanted to rig one of these to speed test my kart.
