Yea, I grew up doing brakes on semi trailers. Learned that when I was 8 years old. I also know how to launch tire lock rings into the stratosphere!

I was surprised to find out that HD doesn’t carry any bearings or bushings. A group of kids (HS or early college age) came in asking for bushings and I realized I have never scene bearings / mechanical bushings in HD. Besides places like Grainger, where do people go for bearings if not ordering online.

Why would they? that would be opening a whole can of worms that few know enough about. There are over 20,000 different types, sizes and configurations of bearings. Every big city has a bearing supply house, Motion industries, national precision, Worldwide, Bearings direct etc. My Favorite is Alpine bearing, but they are not in every town, they do have a telephone.
Avoid Grainger unless you like paying WAY too much. Going to a Bearing distributer will get you quality bearings, going to amazon will get you the finest crap that China has to offer.

Makes sense. I was just thinking about ID. I figured a few 1/2”, 5/8”, 3/4”, 7/8”, and 1” ID varieties of bearings wouldn’t take up too much space, but failed to consider the OD’s and/ or height of each. Maybe each type of bearing at each ID might need like 5 OD variants. I realize that finding off the shelf bearings to fit your needs would require a massive variety to be stocked. I suppose automotive part stores might carry some for popular fixes.
And yes, Grainger is expensive. I’ve only gotten a thing or two from them. One might have been a certain tap I wanted. I do love McMaster Carr. It’s a bit of a drive for me. I’ve gotten axles and a big block of stock aluminum from them.

Ace Hardware here locally has "almost" everything like a bushing, not sure about bearings, probably too specific.

The ace hardware has a selection of very common size bushings and a few bearings.
I've found the car quest here can order bearings any size. Just need the number off the side or look in the catalog for dimensions. Vato zone and oreallys probably could too but you have to be smarter than the kid at the register.

Right there is the problem. Most bearings are metric. The inch sizes are sorta oddballs. Then we have the ones with a inch bore and a metric OD.
So the kid at auto zoo, who would rather be looking at his/her phone, isn't going to have a clue. "what vehicle is that for?"

i hated the “what vehicle is that for” question. It’s scrap metal and lawnmower parts. I gave specifics about what I wanted.

I know some people get mad when asked “what’s if for” but I’m probably just trying to decide to tell you look in plumbing, electrical, or hardware.

Thats true. But a bearing distributer will almost always beat those prices by a LOT!
That bearing ya just paid $10 for could be had for 3 and change. Convenience has its price.
On the other hand, probably takes $9 in fuel to go get it. Its the thrill of the hunt! Thats it! Thrill of the hunt.
