Has anybody tried to mod this muffler? Plan on bringing it to parks that require spark arrestor but it has a solid plate that looks like it almost blocks the entire bore of muffler. It looks very restrictive, almost as if I had the muffler on "choke". I would like to replace it with screen or maybe drill holes. Has anybody had success in modding this muffler with a less restrictive spark arrestor.

My phone is broke so no pictures for now.
Thanks in advance

I am by no means an expert in fluid dynamics but when I looked through the muffler and saw a solar eclipse(see pic)... it was screaming (with a strangled voice) "Drill some speed holes in me!!!!"

I was hoping to keep a functioning spark arrestor, but I'm sure this one is about as restrictive as it gets.

Thinking about drilling out the center of the plate (leaving a washer looking piece attached) and attaching a screen over the hole. maybe with small screws

Any ideas or suggestions as to how to alter this muffler to be less restrictive but still have a functioning spark arrestor

Believe it or not I have heard those are quite free flowing and having cut 1 apart I can believe it. You have a solid larger outer case with a perforated tube about 1 inch in diameter with about 5/16 holes in it running through the middle of the case with a solid disc in the center of the tube. I've used 2 of them on a 18 hp Cushman engine with no loss in performance at all.

Thanks for the info. As I am waiting for a sprocket hub to arrive, I was looking for some cheap HP and a cure for boredom. Maybe its not as restrictive as it looks, and maybe the performance improvement (if any) isn't worth the trouble.

Have the kit mentioned above so Intake, Exhaust, 140 ETube, 0.037 Main Jet, 8degree advanced timing plus the AR3910X spark plug. Have the 18lb springs but will wait till I get billet rod and flywheel to install them.

I might try it anyway as I see chance no chance of catastrophic failure (famous last words). if its too loud or doesn't seem to breath right, I can replace it.

Thanks again

No, I don't think what you found is the same. I was not able to find the 3S or 5S products on the SuperTrapp website, but it would appear that these are better suited to the utility engine application. I find it a little strange that the 3S series has a 1-1/2" inlet, as that is large enough to accomodate something like 100 HP!

What about this one here??

Guess it's the same just sold by parts. My mistake

ok so just to clear things up, "us forest service approved" is bs. The forest service doesnt approve or deny mufflers based on what is advertized, rather, the presense of a spark arrestor, which is just a silly little screen, grate, perforated steel, whatever.

So if you have an open header, you do not meet the forest service regs.

If you have some sort of screen on the back of the muffler, you meet the regs for having a spark arrestor, period. E.g. you get an open header with a clamp on muffler with a screen inside it, then you meet the minimum reqs for having a spark arrestor.

Also, if you ever see "FDA cleared" it does not mean that the FDA approved anything, it just means it has nothing in it that one could reasonably think is harmful. Th FDA actually does approve things, so "FDA cleared" does not equal "approved" just a silly marketing ploy that homeopathic remedies etc use when they are sucking you into their sales pitch.

Also, "OSHA approved" is also bullcrap, osha doesnt approve stuff, it only sets minimum performance standards. Once they are met, the requirement is fulfilled.

So do you all see the pattern here? OSHA, FDA, forest service do not go around stamping stuff saying "we recommend you buy this crap" they set performance standards that are not specific to any one brand. Advertisers play with the verbiage to TRICK you into buying crap that, in fact, only meets minimum performance standards, and has not been approved by any regulatory agency.
