soooo we are planning to install a gx390 with a 40 series on an America Express yard kart. we had to post pone that because we dont have a long enougb chqin yet. meanwhile we put a gx200 on it with a centrifugal clutch. what we noticed was that the band brake we currently have on the kart is no where near enough for the kart. before we even put the 390 on it we want to upgrade our brakes. i currently have 1in live axel key all the way across.
we wanted to have two discs. one for the regular brake and one for an E brake.
what brakes do you guys recommend? is there a kit i can buy?

You definitely don't need two discs. If you want and 'e-brake' of sorts, drill a hole in the brake pedal and put a plate next to it with a hole in it. Then, push the brake and slide a pin through the holes. It will hold the caliper.

Anyway, you can either go mechanical caliper or hydraulic caliper. Hydraulic has the best stopping power, but a hydro system with the caliper, fluid lines, and master cylinder isn't too cheap. Mechanical caliper is decent for a small kart, and cheaper to buy.

You could use the band setup as the e-brake & fit a hydraulic disc setup from a chinese ATV (T-Man did a vid on this some time ago); you can usually pick up a complete setup (minus disc hub) for around $50...

If you go with one of those chinese calipers or master cylinders I HIGHLY recommend completely taking it apart and cleaning it before using. I have personally found a absolutely ridiculous amount of metal shavings left in every one I have had a reason to take apart. Apparently that wasn't in anyone's job description.

Mechanical brakes are pretty decent when setup right...
