Some Advice Please About Exhaust Choice

Hi,

Been lurking for a while, but new to posting. I have a Fox Hornet with a 212 up and running and a Murray Kilowatt with a 420 up on jack stands being built.

My question today is about exhaust for the 212 Hornet. I've got an aftermarket Mikuni clone carb and 18 pound springs on the engine mated with the stock exhaust. I'd like to upgrade the exhaust but am not sure about a good choice.

Options (on Amazon and elsewhere) abound. Can someone recommend an exhaust that is suitable for my 212 and that they have been happy with? My two concerns are 1) burning the exhaust valve by having too little restriction and 2) excessive noise. Noise is not my biggest concern.

Suggestions please. Thanks in advance.

Part of the equation is will it fit in the confines of the kart/kart frame? Many of these newer karts or hybrid kart-buggies have a cage over the engine, a luggage rack, shock absorbers or frame members in the vicinity that may preclude the pipe from going straight up, for example. Better show us your kart.

Another part of the equation is, is it right for the application? Is the engine making enough power to utilize the free flowing exhaust? Is the head ported, or is the potential free-flow already negated by a stock head... This is where it gets theoretical perhaps, but I use a straight pipe header anyways and because I like them. I suspect you will have to re-jet your carburetor once the pipe is added because it will alter the A/F mixture.

I have used a bare straight pipe before but the noise gets tiresome (sounds great at idle though, doopa-doopa-doopa) so everything I buy now is either threaded for the exalted Briggs #294599 "hot dog" muffler (in reality a glorified spark arrestor) or will accommodate a slip-on RLV type.

I believe #1 (burning the exhaust valve) is mythical as is “backpressure” or needed restriction. The purpose of an exhaust pipe is mainly to direct noxious exhaust gases in another direction (like away from the operator) and for scavenging. I could be wrong. It’s wildly scientific after that with diameters and lengths offering more power benefits and/or torque.

Go to the OMB Warehouse site and look at exhaust parts for the predator 212. They have several header configurations, and then get a RLV brand muffler ( sold at the same site ). I have 5 or 6 of them that I run on my karts. They work great. No back pressure, and they take away that awful ear splitting sting you get from a straight pipe.
You won't have any problems burning the exhaust valve. I've used them for years.

If you want to build your 420, they have a great complete hop up kit for that as well.
I just finished a 420 with it installed. Put a grin on this old mans face like hasn't been seen in a long time. Very fast. Couldn't be happier.
