I don't use any social media sites at all, and never will. That is just me though. This site is as far as I will ever go into the realm of "social interaction" over the net.

Hot dang! I thought I was the last guy on the planet that didn't use "social media". Thanks- It's nice to know you're not alone.
I am going to leave the decision to one of the other moderators.
Don't leave it to me!

I also personally feel that we maybe don't NEED any influx of members. We seem to be doing pretty well, and it is not like we generate any revenue by getting more members. As a moderator, I just see more problems with lots of members. I like the cosy feel of the site at the moment.
Agreed!

Please be advised that this is my personal opinion, and not that of the site management
Call it a consensus.

we may not need any more members but it would help to generate more interest in the topic of go karts. since alot of the "young" generation uses facebook when they happen across the facebook page with some videos and pictures of the stuff we make it would spark an interest in the topic.

in a since could use it to generate interest in the topic and point them toward some good sites for info on the topic

You may be right, but I see it a bit differently. Could be the "old bugger" in me. Here's what I got-

Since I was young, I had a fascination with all things motorized. Back then- in the stone age- we didn't have facebook. I still managed to mess with motorized stuff. Flash forward umpteen years, and I came upon this site by using this cool, "Google" search-thingy.

On the flipside, youngun's are born Googling, and if they haven't yet torn themselves away from the interwebs long enough to actually get their hands dirty, I'm not so sure they will with a Facebook-thingy.

One opinion, anyway...

I agree, to a point but, there's also a level of disagreement.

[Rant on]
Being of the same generation, I was the same; my interest in all things mechanical was piqued at an early age, mainly because I had the opportunity. If you remember, I'm the youngest of 11 so, with 6 older brothers who were constantly working on their cars, I was never far away from them.

Fast forward 35 years & most kids don't have the same opportunities simply because they're not exposed to that type of situation, either because they don't have a male role model or the do but, said role model has no interest in that kind of thing.

There was a young kid joined recently who wanted to build a kart but his father didn't want to know about it; who's to say how many kids are out there in the same situation.

On another front, how many members do we have that we've had to spoon feed simply because they don't have the first clue as to what they're doing? Why? Probably because the interest is there but they don't have that positive male role model to help them along (well, that's my theory anyway).

Hey, I'm probably what most younger kids would call "old" too & I was raised by an even older bugger (my father was 48 when I was born). Yes, he taught me a lot &, thankfully, I also had my brothers as well (call me lucky), the same brothers who now recognise my skills & abilities & turn to me for help (perfect karma :))

I had kids young; my oldest was born when I was only 20, the same age gap as there is between me & my oldest sibling. As a result I can relate to younger generations which is yet another "leg up" for me. I tried to get my stepson interested but, his younger half sister has more of an interest in mechanicals than he does . The point is, if I didn't try, neither of us would've known whether the interest was there or not...[Rant off]

Yeah- sometimes a helping hand is, well- helpful. I coulda used one... I guess I'm a little jaded. When I look around, I see so many kids that just couldn't be bothered with something unless it's "virtual". I recently heard the results of a study that indicated that the number of teens eligible to get a driver's license is way down from prior years. Most common reason given? 'Cuz actually driving places would take away from their available time for texting, social media, etc! Really? Call me old school, but I was all hot and bothered to get my permit so I could actually BE with friends, date girls, do road trips, etc...

Now, I do have a lot of respect for the young folk on this forum- good on 'em for wanting to learn, get dirty, and have some real 3D fun! But they appear to be the exception, not the rule.

So true about the permit thing. I got mine right on my half birthday so I could get my lisence right on time. An old custodian once told me: "Even if it is the nerd, if he has a car, he gets the girl." Even though that was back in the day I think it still has merit.

I think that the young kids today (obviously I am considered a young man) just don't have the resources to allow them to get involved in this hobby. Or maybe they are just distracted by technology... Long ago it was almost mandatory to be able to work on a car. But cars these days are very difficult for the casual hobbyist to really dig into.

im of the young gen. i grew up on computers. yet i was able to get away from it once i found this site. but everyone is entitled to their opinions. but i do agree with you guys. its up to the parents to teach them. in comes another reason.

a parent stumbles upon it and gets there kids to do it too.

but yea a facebook page might be a waste

I agree with you guys about kids my age and younger that are addicted to virtual everything...

[hijack of own thread] did you guys hear about the guy that paid an "online" assasin to kill his sons avatar to get him off the computer? [End hijack]

Any who I think a pro for the facebook page would be to get kids that are glued to it a look at what cool things ya can build....

With that being said the con would be that yes if we directed more "noobs" here we would have to put up with "noob" questions. Of course the good side to more members is that every expert started as a "noob" in some way shape or form.

You guys have your right to your opinion and I respect them all so hopefully ya respect mine in that I would think it would be a good idea. Even if it was just for a trial period so we could possibly see what kind of interest people may have.

Ultimately, it's up to Robert to decide if he wants to go any further with it.

I don't see the point. There is a 'general' go karts page that we put up on FB, and if we want to post pics and vids, I don't see the benefit to doing it there, not heredo it here.

If I'm missing something, please fill me in!

+1 I will not intentionally have kids unless i have settled wayyyyyy out in the country in a little place with a small school etc, and even then itl be hard to keep them away from this "playstation World" we live in

Interesting read! Both sides to the debate have good opinions but I sway in the direction of the Auld yins (Scottish for older ppl btw) lol and im still young-ish, i was with the social media crowd 8 years ago, Bebo if a remember right lol but that all stoped when i found the joy of simple old fashiond Hobbies soon enough:lolgoku:

ANd the Mods have it spot on, anyone interested in this would youtube and google anyway and prob would end up here regardless
