I'msure you get lots of threads like this, i searched for a bit but couldn't find anything specifically answering the questions I have.

1. It's an old 440 (from early-mid 80's) from a moto-ski futura, which is a bombardier

2. I wan't my go kart to have lots of low end for going through mud, but decent top end for driving the backroads, what suggestions do you have for this.

3. How will I keep this **** thing cool in the summer?!?!

4. Do you think suspension would be worth it? Won't be doing any jumps at all, mostly just driving around town and through mud for fun.

5. Would 1 1/4" round tubing be fine? Or will the engine have to much power and warp the frame?

That's all, thanks!

1) Cool.
2) Lay hands on both halves of the original CVT and gear it accordingly, factoring in weight, RPM, tire size, etc.
3) Is it a free-air or fan-cooled engine? A scoop or duct may help.
4) Depends on your time, budget, skills, and inclination.
5) 1 1/4 tube will likely be fine, watch the wall thickness. Too thin may equal flimsy, too thick means too heavy. Are you planning on ladder frame, or space (supported) frame?

Thanks for the reply, it's not fan cooled, If i buy a 10" fan and mount it so it blows air onto it would that help?

Frame will be custom made, probably narrower in the front by 2-4 inches, 2 seater, custom roll cage, i kinda have a design made up in my mind, my brother is an architect so hes gonna do up some legit blueprints for it. what would you reccomend for the thickness of the tubing

well there was no cooling system lol, was just the cold winter air that kept it cool. none of that in the summer :/
I thought of having an electric fan run off a seperate battery placed to push air at the engine, along with 1, or 2 duct type things to channel air towards the fan. should work i would think. trial and error :p

thanks for the help guys, can't wait to get this project going!

Now as for steering, I have an old riding lawnmower, would the steering system from that be workable into something that would work?

Just mount it where air can flow over the fins and you'll be fine. if you mount it behind the seat, air shrouds wouldnt hurt.

Steering from a riding mower is sloppy and weak. i wouldnt use it.

The engine is from a snowmobile, its set up to keep it at the right temperature from outside air at ~ -25 to -35 celcius, +25 to +35 temperatures will cause it to overheat, will it not?

Been thinking about do the same thing you are. After looking at this odyssey buggy I just bought. I was thinking making a kart using stock odyssey suspensions. The j-arm with bushings and spindles can be ebayed for about $40.

Look like it would be pretty easy. I like just having to find a cross bar the fit the J-arms. easy to get strait as well.

The J-arms in the bottom pics are not stock odyssey. They are after market and much more if you can find them. The stockers (the ODY thats red in the pics) will have like 50 on ebay right now. (make sure you get spindles. Wheels and hubs for the ody are cheap as well. Maybe $80 for a pair with good tread plus shipping. You will need bushing though. They are $100 unless you can find some good ones with your j-arms.

Front end with spindles suspension hubs and wheels for about $200. Easy to fix if you bend too. Ody have 8" wheels as well.

I must say I never did this. But I like to idea of getting a good strait strong front end. Looks like I could do this pretty easy and simple. with the strait pipe for the front end it looks like getting it strait would be prety easy. The Ody spindles would be pretty strong you would think.

Look on ebay for Honda Odyssey FL250 J-arms

Also look on ebay under FL250 hardware lots. You will find bushings in the lot for about $15 if you are lucky

No...not even a little bit.
Operating temperature will be attained faster...and that is all.

Just be sure that engine is set-up exactly as it was when it was removed from sled...that is...any cowling or shrouds that may have been in place to facilitate cooling.
Above all...use the correct oil AND mix.
