snow sled motor swap

Ok I have a chance to pick up a 440 81 pantera snow sled! initial worries are finding parts for it and finding upgradable parts for it. It runs and since I don't do snowmobiles I think it would be great on my go kart! Little much but if I ever get a bigger frame I'm good! I would love to put a electrical start on it?

Indeed make sure you have a frame that can handle the torque and weight that a sled engine has.

How much more do they weigh? I have what I think is a yerf dog

Or if its a complete sled.. Run it and have fun or sell it and get another kart..

An engine that size would weigh around 75-85 lbs,and then there are the drive components that are needed from the sled like the primary clutch,secondary driven sheave,and then you will need a jackshaft arraignment in order to drive your rear axle,etc,and with all that added weight and power you have better have the braking to stop it all safely,too much power is not a good thing and I do not have first hand knowledge about a yerf dog kart but there are many people on here but I think without lots of reinforcing and modifying the kart to accept the sled engine you could run into trouble down the road you would be better off going with a four stroke utility engine and a CVT to match the output of the engine and be happy with that.Also all that weight on the back of kart like that would upset the balance and handling of the kart for sure.

True, and show us some pictures of the go kart so we can better tell you want to do

You might be better off,start out with something simple and easy to make and then advance from there,that is the best way to learn things IMHO

find a good running rotax motor and then build around it

I had a go cart with a 440 air cooled and it overheated lots. late 70's early 80's motor.

It was most likely not getting enough air, you should of went fan cooled

It was fan cooled sort of, it had a little fan blowing on the cylinders, and it was belt driven so I imagine it spun pretty fast.
It ran fine until you went off road, and started using the power lots.
Maybe the CVT clutch could have been adjusted to allow the motor to rev more.

Probably so, I hope I don't have that problem with mine, and how was you able to tell it over heated

Just started smelling foul and you could feel the heat like putting your hands out to warm them next to a camp fire haha

Oh well where I plan on putting my engine it should get plenty of air

Mine got lots of air but someone said they just are not made to run in hot temperatures.
I don't see why you couldn't change the fan pulleys so it spins way faster lol

Did you rejet the carburetor?

there is a 600cc snowmobile engine with 3 carbs on cl for 200$

I also found a very cheap and easy to bid on, kohler 290cc engine with electric start, and just missing the carburetor
