Smoke from Snorkel

New owner of an ASW Carbide 7150 150cc. After driving the kart for a few minutes, white smoke starts coming out from the rear snorkel. What is causing that smoke? Should i be concerned? Also, when we put the kart into drive, it takes a few seconds before the kart actually starts to move. What's causing that lag and how do i fix it? Sorry, not familiar with small engines and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Is that going into the gearbox or CVT or is that the crankcase? Sounds like the belt is burning up but im not certain thats the CVT gaurd. On that bar behind the vent, it looks like theres a bunch of built up material.

Maybe some better pictures would help.

I just looked up the parts diagram. It's the CVT cover. Is it as easy to take that cover off and inspect the belt? Sorry, have no idea on these small engines. Thanks in advance.

Should be about 9 screws to take the cover off.

you are correct, there's 8 M8 bolts holding the cover on so i think i can check the belt and replace if necessary. On the second question, do you know why it's a lag on the vehicle moving forward? thanks!

Probably a wore out belt. Could be stretched or shrunken requiring more clamping force. More engine speed is needed for more clamping force so the lag may just be the engine getting up to engagement speed.

Could be a wore out spring. Wore out weights...

i was thinking of just going ahead and replace both the clutch and variator assembly all together since it's being sold as a kit with a new belt.
hopefully the kit fixes the smoking and the delayed gearing into moving forward?

I honestly doubt thats necessary. I would start with a new belt first. It takes a long while of driving before the CVT parts start wearing out. I would certainly inspect things first. There could still be an issue that caused the belt to wear. It might not even be the belt.

thanks for the advice, i will start with the belt and then check the variator and clutch assemblies

i went ahead and replaced the variator and clutch assemblies. drives so much better now. i did post another thread showing what the inside of the cover looked like. any ideas why it looks like black sludge? thanks!

What you saw was actually pretty normal. The belt ( even when perfectly aligned)
is constantly wearing, throwing off rubber dust. If alignment is off a little bit, while the kart will perform properly, the dust build up is accelerated. Throw in a little engine blow by ( always present ) and what you saw is what we all see inside the belt guard. Don't worry about it.

glad to know, thanks for the information. also, how important is it to have the gasket with the cvt cover. i was waiting for it to come in but installed it without it and now i'm afraid once i take it off to install gasket, i might not be able to align perfectly...

The cover has two alignment dowels, one in an upper left and lower right bolt location. In your other thread the upper left one is in the engine case and the lower right one came out in the cover. They are there to ensure alignment of the cover on the engine.

Thanks, I did notice the alignment dowels now. First time, I didn't and had a hard time getting the cover to seat probably...
