The kids have been wearing out the Yerfdog I re-built for them that you guys helped me with early this summer (and ever since). I never got around to getting the brake right. Its just a simple band brake and looks to be complete but just doesn't do much. I've never messed with one.
Should I try to adjust it from the nut on the rod linkage up front near the pedal? or should I remove the rear tire and do something back there? The band tightens around the drum (at least the slack is taken up) when you press the brake pedal. It just doesn't slow down the kart much.
Any wisdom is appreciated. Thanks guys from some very happy kids. :wai:

The material inside the band can wear down over time. The good news is that they are replaceable, not very expensive, and it's not a difficult job. You'll need very specific kart brand/model and part numbers to get the right one. If the material is not too worn, you can adjust the tension. A pic of the kart and another pic or two of the brake setup would be helpful.

Well it was very simple indeed. There is NO brake material left on the band. After looking it appears to be cheapest and best just to buy a new band. Thanks!

Hey PoBoy and n3480h, on a simple band brake where each end slides over a threaded bolt, is each end supposed to be secured by a nut? On my old one, there was only a nut securing the band on one of the bolts. The other end was rusted on the bolt but didn't have a nut. Wasn't sure if there was supposed to be a nut or not.

I added one but got some hellacious sounds after a few minutes so I had to park it again. I'll get a closer look this weekend but was wondering if there is typically a nut on both bolts. Thanks. Matt
