I am embarrassed to ask this question but here it goes ....
If I install the following shunt (with voltage meter) on my electric go kart, do I simply bolt the shunt directly onto the metal frame or does it need to be bolted to something nonconductive (or a wooden mounting base on the go kart)?

bayite DC 6.5-100V 0-100A LCD Display Digital Current Voltage Power Energy Meter Multimeter Ammeter Voltmeter with 100A Current Shunt https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013PKYILS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_b.dxAbWZFHK6G

isolated! rubber, not wood (wood can get wet and be then conductive)

it's a known value resistor to measure currents, if you install it to a metal frame it's effectively bypassed (since the current can crawl through the frame instead of the shunt.)

Also, since the chassis of your kart is usually grounded, and the shunt needs a voltage differential to work (i.e. the positive battery terminal) you'd effectively short the batteries by mounting it to the grounded frame.

You could mount it inside of an adequate sized plastic box

...to keep it clean & isolated

Run your battery wires/cables & your smaller wires (B-) & (P-) thru each end

I used half of an old aquarium air pump box to mount the shunt into, when I did some testing on this kart.

It's kinda crude but, it worked

sid, Thank you for your response. I will be sure to do so. I recently purchased the following voltage/amp meter which came with a shunt but no value resistor. Your advice is greatly appreciated and I will be sure to add a value resistor during the install.

Functional Artist, Thanks for your idea as welll. I watched each of your videos in that series and I learned a lot. Thanks for posting those.

Would this mounting bracket provide sufficient insulation? I picked it up at Home Depot for about a dollar and it would be very easy to mount to the frame of the go kart. Thanks for all of the great advice.

Basically it is a plastic/PVC type material. Thanks.

Should do nicely..
personally I think a cut off piece of those silicone oven mittens would suffice really,
but if you manage to tuck the shunt away from puddles even more it's never a bad thing :D
