Hey guys whats up? Man, i havent posted in forever. Anyways, i have a few questions. This goes out to the guys who have built or have knowledge of shifter karts.

I recently bought a KL250 engine off of eBay for $83 USD. Its awesome! The only thing is, it doesn't come with the ignition box or any wiring. Lame i know, but it was a good deal.

Question #1: What wiring would i have to do to get the motor to run? I know i would have to get the Ignition coil/driver im assuming. But what else is needed to get it going?

Question #2: I am currently using #35 chain with my current setup. The gear on the output shaft of the KL 250 transmission is larger and this chain does not fit. What size is it?

Question #3: Where can i get a hub that will fit my 1" live axle and will hold the sprocket for the aforementioned chain size of the KL250 transmission?

hmm well you will need the coil and cdi box i assume. And the run the wiring from them to each other and the engine and you should be set. It most likely fits 42 chain aswell.

I'm doing an RM250 motor on my kart, you might get some ideas and sources if you read through it: http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/showthread.php?t=4742 , You will need a coil and a CDI box for that motor, that's pretty much it. Ground the black wire from the coil and from the CDI box and it should fire, ground the black/yellow wire to kill it/shut it off. ;) :cool:

Question #1:

Its going to help if you can find out the exact year of your engine. They've probably made several "ignition box" changes on the KL250's over the years. I'd get your engine numbers and call/email a kawasaki dealer/parts department explaining your situation and asking how much it would be to buy all needed componets. Then casually ask what year yours is... You should come away with a list what parts are needed, the corect terms for them and what they cost new. At that point you'd either go for it or have all info needed to hopefully get a much better deal buying used parts.

I haven't actually received shipment of the engine yet. It wont be here till Wednesday. Ill snap some pics as well. Its from a 1982 KL Enduro Bike. The cylinder head was rebuilt a few years ago according to the seller. The engine was originally bought in a Lot from a closing motorcycle shop.

The guys on Thumpertalk helped me ID my motor as an 84~85, as opposed to a 1990 as I was told and bought it as. I'm not complaining though, I got the coil, CDI box, Mikuni flatslide carb, radiators and hoses with it, Paid $250 for it, bought an expansion chamber off Ebay for $29 delivered, it fires up and sounds MEAN. Had to order a float and needle and seat for the carb, it was flooding with just gravity fed fuel. I'm pretty sure the floats were saturated, and I'm swapping the needle and seat for ones that intended for use with a fuel pump. :cool:

It's almost certainly in the 520-525 series chain range. Note that a 530 chain will fit over a 520 sprocket, since it's just a wider chain. Not sure about 525 though, should work. BUT a 520 chain won't fit over a 530 sprocket.
