seting up disc brake

Does anyone know how to setup this brake caliper?

Here's how I have it setup now and I've broken 2 cables trying to get the kart to stop from pressing on the pedal so hard...

the way you have it mounted I think it PUSHES to stop not pulls

The way motorcycles mount rear disc brakes is on top the swing arm towards the front of the rotation (take a look at a modern motorcycle to see what I mean). You would need to rotate your caliper forward to mimic that. I do not know how your caliper works so that may or may not be possible. Are you using a cable designed for kart brakes? Is it possible to use a rod all the way back instead?

IMHO, mechanical disc brakes are for stuff that doesn't go very fast. You really should be looking at going to a hydraulic braking system. You can often find them used pretty cheap.

iv'e got a plan set to build a quad where they used exactly that caliper and disc, they said it was utter crap and had almost no stopping power, they certainly look pretty pathetic, im with rickracer on this one, get a different caliper and maybe a different disc to.

look at ebay for hydraulic calier off quads, motorcycle or sleds... i bough a raptor 660 caliper off ebay for 70$ shipped or something like that... and i dont regret it!!! HELL that stops

yes, it was an old MTD from the 80's... my mother sucked up one of the tire chains and destroyed the auger gear box and ended up throwing the whole machine away because it wasn't repairable... I grabbed the motor...

Hey that looks like an all aluminum frame there, pretty cook kart man. I'm guessing your an aluminum fabricator... right?

On a differential rear axle like yours, I was wondering if the rotor can somehow be mounted to the diff itself, so hopefully both rear tires could help stop. (but i still think you need a hydraulic brake setup too)

thanks, and yes, it is all aluminum, no I'm just a fabricator/welder by hobby... I'm sure there is a way to put a rotor on the diff itself, I would just have to get it machined to fit.

Seems like we had a thread here awhile back with pics and info regarding diffs and how to set up a rotor for 2 wheel brakes. You might search for it, It'd be kind of a shame to have a nice disk brake system only stopping 1 wheel. For all I know your rotor location might be actuating both sides now, but for some reason I dont think so.

no, its definitely only gonna stop one wheel in the position its in right now... once i get it working right... I would either have to get the rotor machined to fit the differential housing or get another disc brake setup for the other half of the axle.

I couldnt find that diff thread info here, but the Northern Tools online diff ad has some customer feedback info claiming the guy mounted a rotor to his diff. He just used longer sprocket mounting bolts/spacers to install a second sprocket (with ground down teeth) that was used as his brake rotor. I dont know how well the diff would lock up both wheels but its probably a less expensive option than a dual hydraulic setup.

Heck a secondary mechanical setup like you have now would double your curent stopping ability...
