Split axles?

I thought the axle was bent but maybe the gears or whatever is inside of the sprocket is wore out/busted. I have attached some pictures. If I can replace the sprocket and use the split shafts I will, but of course I can always just buy a new shaft, sprocket and replace this assembly all together. Input anyone?

that's a Comet GCD differential...

if you can't MAKE gears for it, and they're busted one way or another,
you'll have a very very hard time finding replacements.

So open it up, check it out and if it's not done by an ounce of grease and some gentle
filing away the burrs..
easiest is to replace it with a 1" peerless 100 you'll need a new sprocket with it
(since yours will not fit)
other than that it's a drop in replacement for all I know;)

You never seem to fail, thanks a million!

I was going crazy trying to find information about this axle. I wasnt sure if it came from a lawnmower or what. I will break it open tomorrow but ut has so much play in it, I unsure whats in there.

Currently looking at replacing it with a 44inch axle and 60T chain. What are the advantages if I were to go down to 42, 40 or maybe even an 38inch axle as a replacement. Which bearings will I need as well, I know for a 1inch bore but whats the difference with or without pin location.

Im about to look into this 1" peerless 100 that you speak of.

Thanks a million

Well, the closer your rear wheels are to the bearings, the less chance you have to bend the axle,
in that reagrd a sort axle is beneficial.
But you'll have to make sure you'll for sure have enough clearance for the wheels (the mustn't rub the brakes or chassis of course.

And a wider track adds to the karts stability, (unsure how it's called in english... bank angle?? is that right?? *shrugs* on a plain it'd be roll...) Anywho.. too narrow isn't a good idea either.

And sure, 2" doesn't sound much, but since full grown offroad cars add something like 2.5" to increase their -again...bank angle?- considerably.. it's still a considerable amount I'd say ;)

What bearings...
collared go kart bearings (self aligning)
since in case the axle deflects slightly the bearings doesn't start binding immediately and you'll still have a smooth ride (and a working bearing) afterwards ;)
A pin locator (.. we speak about the dimple in the outer race, right?)
is just there to help install it in the bearing retainer and align said outer race nicely with the chassis.
If you need one or not depends on your bearing retainer, some allow for such dimple, some require one and others just couldn't make use of it.
In any case having it, doesn't hurt...
if your bearing reatainer requires one it WOULD hurt to not have it though ;)
