So I was wondering if I put a peerless transmission or transaxle, how I do the clutch? I think i can put a centrifugal clutch on the engine and then it will me a semi-automatic transmission. Is that correct?

Thanks!

The Peerless 700 is a venerable tranny, and if you race prep it and treat it right, it will treat you right. Normally, these are installed in lawn tractors and the like, using a belt-tensioner-type clutch. You can use a centrifugal unit. No trannies of this type have built-in clutches.

YA could shift it while moving. But their hard to get in and out of gear with tension on the internals, Like while parked on a hil.

Don't. The system is not synched, and not designed for it. The "tension" is your first clue! Unless you WANT to replace shift keys on a regular basis...

I have a '84 murray with one. I barely use the clutch, and its been used hard its whole life.

Better yet, go to ATLTF.COM and ask. They'll tell ya practically the same thing I just did.
You could also ask Maine Mud Mower about it.

Or- you could ask guys that RACE them. Putting such a tranny in a kart is a lot more punishing than in a tractor. Yes- I shift my lawn tractors on the fly, too. A wee bit different.

Now I ask you- are you as intimately famailiar with the guts of a Peerless as I am? Because we can all speculate on things, but this is one occasion where I am quite confident, based on firsthand knowledge and experience.

So- to the OP- you've heard both sides, it's up to you to make an informed choice.

Try the variable speed pully set up found in many mtd tractors. All three of my tractors have this setup. The transaxle is just forward, reverse, and neutral. They use a fancy double pully that adjust between two belts. So as the pully moves forward the rear belt is pulled to the center of the top pully witch pushes the center of the pully down forcing the bottom belt to the outside of the pully. Shift on the fly with no problems.
