On those self propel lawnmowers with the 3 speed transmission what type of clutch do they have?

AFAIK... not successfully....

I was thinking since i want to use a 22hp twin cylinder engine... a manual clutch might be the way to go....

That kind of motor, you be better making use of a big twin Harley separated transmission. They have all you could need, clutch and trans, right or left side drive, belt or chain drive.
But with that being said, might aswell as get a junked motorcycle and pick the motor from that......
