Hey guys just wondering what sort of seats you guys use on homemade shifter or race karts?

My yard cart used a school chair but I think with over 20hp on my new shifter Im going to need something a little better. I was thinking of maybe trying to make my own fiberglass one using styrofoam to make a mold. Ive seen relatively nice seats on ebay for 70ish but I think thats a little steep so if I could find a way of doing it cheaper but still safe that would be great. Thanks

You can get some Summit Racing seats w/ seat cover for 59.95 + shipping.
I think they would be way more comfortable than a typical tiny go-cart seat.
you can find cheap 4-point harnesses as well... and they will fit through the Summit seats.

If money is tight, keep searching on ebay you'll probably end up finding a used one somewhere in the $20-$40 range.

I use and recommend Tillott brand kart seats.

You'll find more seats and sizing info here: http://www.cometkartsales.com/store/seats/seats.htm (what ever race kart seat you get make sure it fits you snugly or it wont hold you in very well.

Those plastic race car seats wont hold you in all that well (race karts develop a lot more G-forces than most cars can) and unless you've got a roll bar you'd never want seat belts in any go kart.

styro will only work as a mold if you cover it in something that is resin proof. aluminum foil is one route. as a seat, it will need to be strong, "when in doubt, make it stout!!" i made myself a new seat for my ody, it looks like crap, but it holds my weight in jumps. it is a seat bottom only and is braced front and rear through the stock bracing. i would say it is 1/4" thick woven glass, if i were to do it all over again, i would go with the mat and vacuum bag it.

thanks for pointing that out andercart... agreed you should only have a belt w/ a cage. I do know that if you have the cage and buy the racing seats (chaep ones) a 4-point harness will hold you in place pretty good. and i know that one of those really cheap racing seats (summit offers) are pretty small and fit snug. (i have the older style in another project of mine and it works nicely)

I've heard of guys using a plastic school chair, and using a triangular piece of sheetmetal/aluminum/whatever riveted/screwed/bolted to either side for rigidity and lateral support. Maybe you could add to that by glassing the whole thing, and perhaps some upholstery, too?
