I'm really new at this so I'll just And see where it goes. I was given a 5hp sears motor. I took it down seems to fully intact. So my question is are the older sears motor the same as Briggs how can I tell... please help with what ever you can.

Post pics. Sears (to my knowledge) never made their own engines, just rebranded other manufacturers. Depending on it's age, you probably have a Tecumseh. Post the numbers stamped on the shroud- I have a Sears-Tec cross reference, and we can find out the exact specs.
