Years ago their was a automotive catalogue by the name of J.C. Whitney that sold a engine overhaul kit in a can and pellets that one installed through the spark plug holes, they claimed that this kit put metal filler back on the worn cylinder walls, valves, rings, and stopped oil burning and I guarantee that some gullible people spent money on that crap just to name some of the many money making claims that are out there even today!

I use seafoam all the time when needed, it will not repair anything it us a cleaner and a good strong cleaner at that, put it in the engine it will clean it up , if you have some water in your gas put s can to a full tank it will take care of that. Unhook you brake booster hose if you have power brakes , fill a cup or something with the seafoam, and take the end of the hose with the vehicle running and dip it in the seafoam slowly so it dont kill the engine till its gone, doing this will clean the vacuum system. And it will blow white smoje out for a while till its gone but won't hurt anything.
But as far as doing any repairs to the engine or anything, its not going to happen it is a cleaner that it. JMO and i have been using it when needed for a long time now. I have to agree with desertduler no such thing as a fix it in a can it just doesn't work. Snake oil yep.

I put goat turds in a medicine bottle......I guy took some ......and said : "These taste like CRAP!"

The only 2 products I have ever had any kind of success with are Seafoam as a cleaner and Marvel Mystery Oil mixed with gas in my old Terratrac crawler (helps save valve guides). Also Marvel mixed with acetone or kerosene is a great rust buster.

Do not tell me that they are outta business! my grandfather and I spent MANY a day and night, looking through the catalogs. It was/is a good place to find hard to find vw parts. I was HUGELY disappointed when they quit selling the fiberglass body kits.
Man, if jcw is out of business, then that closed a chapter in my life. One of my favorite things to do, was look through them pages, with my grandfather.......

cool! Just ordered new catalogs! They have some useful things.... It's not bad to have around... It's the only place I know times get a 12volt coffee maker, for less than $20..... Now, if I just drank coffee.....

They do have some odd stuff too. Many moons ago i wanted power windows and they use to sell a box with a motor in it that went over the shaft the arm was on. Yee ha i had power windows

Yeah I have to admit even though I said Desert was dating himself with the old JCW catalog, I can remember spending hours way back in high school in the early '90s drueling over parts for my 1969 Baja bug. Now its hours off searching 10 different websites and finding the best price and free shipping on the 11th site after ordering from the 10th. DOH! at least back then you did not know there were cheaper places.

Err, regarding the original topic....

IMHO, from what I understand seafoam is an "all at once" cleaner. I don't really think that is the best way to clean the crud out of engines... but rather a little at a time would be better?

I see that you can put the stuff in the fuel, Id rather that than dumping it strait in the intake.

If I had to guess, I would assume that it's just the thermal shock from the seafoam hitting hot carbon/gunk that gets it off more than the ingredients. It's not really anything special, just google for the MSDS.

Try pulling a head and scrubbing the carbon off with Seafoam. Hasn't done any better than water in my experience.

With that being said, someone once told me about using a spray bottle with water and spraying into the intake when running.
A few good sprays would help to blast off the carbon deposits...
