Got the new parts installed for the axle. Kart ran good but now I do not have enough brake power. I think a single 4" drum is not quite enough for a kart & rider combo of 500#. I think I will be looking into a mechanical disc brake setup before I dismantle and paint the kart.

What do others have for experience with small drum brakes on heavier karts?

Even on a single seat manco dingo , or minibike, at best they are adequate. I think your asking too much from that little drum.

Yea and I believe I am asking too much from my 60's tecumseh 6hp. It gets the kart going but will not open the torque converter up all the way. Will only do about 20mph currently. I will def get a disc brake first then look into the motor.

Mounted the disc brake and caliper today. Came out pretty awesome. Can't wait to try it next week.

Thanks Bubba. I am one that can't wait to see the finished product! I am close but a little more fine tuning and maybe a couple more hp. Lol

Couldn't pass up a new power plant for the kart. Got a new Briggs 205cc for the price of a predator 212. Was surprised at the torque this little motor had. I still believe that I am not able to get to full 3600 rpm with my gear ratio and engine setup. I will be modifying the throttle cable mounting bracket as it looks Mickey Mouse but at least let me test the new setup within 10 mins.
I have a tachometer on the way so I can verify this theory as well as a 9 tooth sprocket for my tc driven. This I would think give me a better chance of getting to 3600 rpm. Will be going from a 6:1 final ratio to about 6.7:1. Not a lot but I think it will be enough.
Then it's some slight modification to the front suspension then paint!

I mounted my tachometer and i have determined that I max out at 21.7 mph at 3700 rpm with the current 6:1 ratio. I am going to try the 9 tooth/6.7:1 ratio to see what difference it makes. I hoping a little more torque will open up the TC a little more for a little more top end. Results to follow.

I proved my theory correct. Just got 25.1 mph at 3700 rpm with the 6.7:1 ratio. I think I am done fine tuning everything. I have a chain/disc guard to fabricate then off to paint! Can't wait to see it done.
