I live in NJ, and one town over is a metal recycler that pays $11.50 per hundred pounds of mixed metal - 500 lbs mininum which is why I toss scrap on the side of the house until I have a full pickup full (typically about 1500-1800 lbs). Mostly short 1" - 4" cutoffs. the longer stuff I keep for projects.

they pay more for aluminum, brass and copper but they want it seperated, cleaned and all other substances (like wire insulation) removed before they weigh it. I personally cannot be bothered and toss everything into the bed, run over the scales, then dump it in the big scrap pile and drive over the scales again. Im too lazy to get out of my pickup aand sort.

I even sort my chips between steel and non-ferrus in rubbermaid containers bolted to moving dollys to collect scrap weight on all the chips and shavings from my lathe and milling machine.

The price has dropped considerably on scrap metal from last year I know a guy with a wrecking yard who would get almost $300 for a crushed car early last year now he's lucky to get $100 maybe less.

Metal ain't worth the effort and gas to hual it in this economy. I had roughly 500lbs of scrap and i wouldn't even make what it would cost in gas to drive it to the scrap yard. I just threw it to the curb and let some guys who do it for a living take it.

thought 3 years ago, i took about 100lbs of copper guttering to the scrap yard for my boss, got close to $240 for it.

i often have a 33' two car trailer behind my crewcab, and sometimes on trash night i'll drive around a little and push appliances onto the trailer just by tipping them over, then take any metal i see loose and toss it in the fridges, stoves and dishwashers.

the last run I did was about a month ago... was a good run... had the truck bed overflowing with metal crap and the trailer was full of appliances stacked three high in most places... after three hours of collecting I ran out of room and called it a night. The next morning i went one town over to the scrapyard with 3700lbs of mixed metal.

$400 for a nights work, and no I didn't spend nearly that in gasoline even with my 11mpg crewcab. *maybe* a quarter tank tops.

yea scrap steel aint worth crap but aluminum and copper are worth the effort. Mow lawns, clean gutters, go to the junk yard buy parts for cheap sell online for a profit (I do this with old jeep parts and make a killing)

The thing about scrap like copper pipe/wire, brass, old car cats etc is the scrappers will get real suspicious if you start bringing in loads, due to shadier individuals going around and stealing these materials for the scrap value.

i just recently started doing that with factory turbo's, intercoolers, injectors and honda parts no luck yet but i guess it'll take a some time to get out there.

Obviously, and due to that, many druggies have taken a hacksaw and started to cut off cat's to people's cars.

Was a big thing about a year ago... I dunno about now. I do have two old 87' Camry cats :D
