auuuuuhhhhhhhhggggggggg i'm getting pulled in too many directions, brake lean, acetone, gas (petrol), tsp, prep and etch, denatured alcohol, mineral spirits! this tsp stuff can i just rub it on with a rag, cause thats all i'm interested in, no 3 weeks wrestling the angle grinder with a wire brush or a sanding disk, i also don't own a pressure washer. all i care about is that it works good enough and requires minimal work! lol

Relax, Use what you got. There are may different ways to accomplish the same results. Acetone first (with appropriate safety precautions), change out your paper towels often, or you will just be spreading the oil around. Then, follow the directions of the paint manufacturer. I see you bought primer and paint, just follow their recommendations. I assume you wire brushed your welds to remove any flux. After the Acetone, just wash everything with dish soap and water, but hose everything off before it has a chance to dry. Otherwise any residual oil is left on the metal.

If you want to see the effectiveness of dish soap, just add a few drops of oil to a wide shallow container of water. Then add a few drops of dish soap (dawn works best, but any dish soap will do) on the oil and watch what happens. (Old Boaters trick) :D

That's why I recommended the pressure washer with the TSP, you have to rinse off the cleaner, before it dries. I usually just hit it with a sanding disk on the grinder after that to get it nice and shiny. :D

With Acetone, just keep changing up the rags until you see no more oil on the rags. Follow up with the soap and water, just as a cheap precaution.

It really is simple in the long run, and once you have it all cleaned,WEAR GLOVES, do not touch the metal with your bare hands or you will leave an oil residue behind (fingerprints)

Take your time with the spray cans, you have no control over the width of the spray, or the amount of paint being dispersed, so many light coats will yield a better finish than trying to put down a couple of heavy coats. ;)

i thought people can work at 13. i know we can mow yards, trim hedges do general cleanup etc. i want to say that they can only work like 20 hours a week, and no dangerous crap what so ever. while i understand the reasoning behind building your own kart, i definitely don't understand the price tag. for 1100, if you are sabe (spanish for understand; in this case understanding) you can get a lot more for the money. i'd scope out the scrap yards for newer metal, a good used kart frame (for axles, wheels, control lines and steering linkage), an engine with gears, and possibly a welder that needs a fuse. for what's listed, i'd expect to pay around 500. personally, i know what most tools are capable of, and i'd never build a ground up kart. it is more costly, the kart has no name to sell it, and i doubt you will ever see the money you put into it. can be a great learning experience on multiple grounds.

well first off i wanted to build something my self, the price tag...... i was attacked by spider carts on that one, i tried asking them how much they spent but they don't reply to most emails especially non-customers so when i got the plans i had the tools and i started working and it was too late because it was only by the time i got to buying parts that i realized how much it was really gonna cost, i considered making my own weldements(sry about spelling) but it would cost me more to buy special drill bits and stuff so i wouldn't save much, any-way i'm not happy about the price i could have prob made 2 karts and a mini for the same cost :mad2:. my next projects will be CHEAP! if you notice other people building spider carts have spent outrageous amounts of money for what they are getting. oh-well money is money i can always earn more of it, i think i will be happy and get good enjoyment out of my kart, i don't think it would be worth it to make it stock though, without a tc i think this kart is wayyyyyyyyyyy to expensive built stock for what you get. but like i said i can always make more money, i love building stuff, i will enjoy this kart a-lot, also my next vehicle of some sort (not sure what yet, but that won't happen until i get more funds) will be nice an inexpensive, band brakes, welded-chain steering wheel ect, i think the amount of stuff i have learned with this project is worth the cost, because i now have the experience and now-how to build something else.

EDIT: one thing that has added cost is the fact that i don't have junk-yards around here and i don't have stuff laying around, also my dump wont let me take metal or old engines. also working age around here is defiantly 15, so i'm stuck with mowing lawns, i have enough weekly yard work that a make about 40 bucks a week which is pretty good if you ask me but working a real-job at minimum wage would get me about 40 bucks for 5hrs of work vs one whole week.

hmm, it says that states enacted their own child labor laws. it also states that whoever, state or fed, has the oldest age, is the age to go by. sorry. but there are other jobs you can do at any age, paperboy etc

i looked into it a bit and i'm 99.99999999 percent sure i can work at 14, hope fully i can get a job at the hardware store, or the lawn-mower repair shop(may be considered hazardous) , or at a rock-climbing camp(i have been climbing for about 3yrs now), i would try to get a job at the auto mechanics shop, or the welding shop but hose are prob considered 100 percent hazardous, lol. this is one thing MA will let me do, unlike other states MA doesn't allow ANY motorized vehicle on the street without the driver having a license, those razor scooters people ride on there street...... illegal, things like that annoy me! http://www.mass.gov/rmv/alerts/scooter.htm

EDIT: a while back i looked into a paper job, but at a 15min drive away, 7 papers, and 5cents per-paper...... i wasn't interested.

What you need to do is get to know some of the local shops in your area. Show them an interest to learn and they will show you how to do stuff. Stuff you can take down the road with you to other jobs.

The law never stopped me from learning. If your not getting paid for it, ... it's not illegal.

If those are the things your interested in, ... Get to know people or shops that you can learn from. It's not hard to let them know your very interested in what they do. More times than not most people are willing to teach others.

If you can do that for a year with a few different skills, ... you will have the edge of any others your age and above. These are the type of people I like to hire.

The best job in the world is a job you enjoy and love to do.

Ask me how I know! ;)

actually funny you mention it, i have been taught a lot by fellow rock climbers, the people at the hardware store, unfortunately i haven't had the chance to go to the lawn mower shop often, i know the guys at the welding shop, they critiqued me a bit, but i mostly taught my self then got refined by my uncle. being a prototype/model maker, sounds like a fun job.

Then the price was just right. As an adult, ... what do you think it would have cost to learn all the things you did in school?

You came out ahead, and I am sure your parents realize this and are willing to fund your endeavor.

lol, i went to the hardware store, but my mom didn't want to wait 1/2hr for me to find all the nuts and bolts, so all i walked out with was some diamond plate(which was almost 10 bucks cheaper at the hardware store compared to the home depot.)

This is a great site for steering principles and many other items. Depending upon where you plan on using your kart, Ackerman may not be all that important. Off road doesn't matter as much because the tires will slip and not grab like on pavement.

thanks for the link, i was looking for that site. Ackerman is how the spindles are setup, so i can change that whenever, i don't want really tough cornering or straight running, so ill leave caster dead center, and neither my spindle brackets or frame are setup for camber so i will leave that alone, i will fix things if need be, but currently i have enough headaches trying to figure out where pieces go (the scorpion plans tell you how to cut the pieces very nicely, but after that they say here's some pictures, have fun)
