school project, maybe.

even with that it still might cost like 40-70 dollars for the controller, which isn't much savings compared to a 90 dollar used golf cart controller.

i'm still bouncing around the idea of actually making this thing, its just not as interesting as the mono wheel, yet it still kinda seems like a better option.

I can see the monowheel "novelty factor" wearing off quite quickly after you have fallen over a few times, although it would still be pretty darn cool!

i just thought of this, and it would make this bike way cooler, what do you guys think about ripping a few rear sprockets, and the rear derailleur from a bicycle and hooking them up to this thing? i could have some gears with massive power so i could go up hills, and then i could have a high gear so i could hit my top speed but not sound like i running up the street with a chainsaw. only thing i'm worried about is the speed, to reach 15 with this thing the wheel would need to spin way faster than a bike at 15mph. and maybe the chain not holding up?

a guy i know at a bike shop made a 2 stroke mini chopper that had a belt off the crank, and a tensioner to another pulley on a JS. the other side of the JS was a small bike sprocket, and in the rear was all the gears from a mountain bike.

he said it went over 50mph.

i havent seen him in a while... i might be able to go there a few months from now and get a picture but the project will be over.

how about a 2.5 clone, hillard clutch, northern tool JS kit, and call it done?

that woule leave you at about $150.

btw, it is fun to have awesome power at low end, even if it is hairy to ride fast.

even a 6.5 clone could fit in a real small bike, if you design the frame around it, get a smaller tank, re route exhaust, and maybe a small aftermarket or home made air filter.

i did think about that (unfortunately the thread was lost with the server crash) my current plan would be a bike engine kit, and the rear sprockets from a mountain bike, would cost about as much as i can get the engine kit for. i might still consider the hf clone though, i already have a 5/8" bore clutch collecting dust.

idk man, this bikes frame is going to be like 8 1/4" tall, and 4" wide, lol. but i do agree about the equation that torque times go kart to the power of mini bike = fun.

EIDT: the main reason i chose the bike engine kit over the hf 2.5 is price, power, size, and looks.

oh yeeeeeah i remember that.

umm... the 6.5 is cheaper than the 2.5... i just checked. WTF??

what about using that kids bike you had, and modify the frame so its more like a mini bike? (using the bike kit engine)

you could use the steering at least..

i could do that, but i would rather not cut that thing up, and i already have 20ft of steel pipe in my basement waiting to be made into a mini. must just be because they sell so many more of those 6.5 engines.

I think electric would be cool. My shop teacher wants to make a battery powered bar stool to scoot around school on. You can take them anywhere because there is practically no noise and zero emissions.

yea.. and so many people kill them. bringing mine back this weekend! ha.

lucky.. ive never been able to afford brand new metal. i would keep it simple as possible. if i was you, (if i had money) id get that bike kit engine so you can dimension the engine and start designing.

how much longer until its due?

the mono wheel, if i was doing it, would take me probably like a year. :p

so you might wanna make a list of options and use process of elimination!

does have a cool factor, but this electric stuff seems kinda expensive. would be cool if i could ride it in my basement without killing myself though.

Might he be dead? :ack2:

gee i hope not! well last time i saw him, was when he was helping me build my 43cc pit bike. (i even bought the motor off him)

he never rides it much because its probably really illegal :roflol: and he has it parked in a shed right next to the main road haha.

i really wish i had a pic of it though it is really cool.

anyways yeah i like gas engines because... well.... isnt electric like an action movie on mute???

but... you can still watch this "movie" at midnight ;)

i have got a month (including one week of vacation) for planning, building, and testing, then a week or so for painting and making my presentation.

i actually have all the dimensions figured out already, i always find myself trying to figure out every last detail i can imagine before i spend a penny, which is good, but i make wayyyy less stuff that way. as for getting money, walk dogs, do as many chores as your willing to do, and don't buy anything for several months (i haven't really bought anything i can remember since like October)

unless i go to the length of making my own controller i don't see much of an engineering challenge in an electric scooter either, but maybe i'm missing something. there are a few reasons i like electric, they are silent, no exhaust gases, and full torque at the start! but gas engines, sound cool, cheap, and are easy to find.

EDIT: the main goal of this project is basically to make a fun, inexpensive vehicle of some sort in a month.
