i think you should make the two wheeled thing as the mono wheel needs to be perfect in design and and u need to be very coquadinated, paceint, and have a high pain threshhold

i think the two wheeled one would be more fun

you really think the two wheel would be more fun? i told the teacher today that i was gonna do the mono wheel, i suppose i could change my mind.

mono wheel:
-pros.
cheaper.
less work (less time consuming)
simpler.
-cons.
requires good balance (i do have decent balance).
could cause some pain.

di-wheel:
-pros.
stable.
quite.
-cons.
more expensive.
more work (more time consuming)
could cause sea sickness.
would require a lot more planning. (takes up time)

i think both would be cool projects, but the mono wheel seems like it would be more fun, the di wheel would be like a mobility scooter with less power and more speed.

right now i'm trying to come up with a decent looking design for a mono wheel. i like the look of the McLean mono wheel.

p.s. fowler, why do you think the mono would need to be perfect in design and the di wheel wouldn't? just because of balance?

im thinking more of the side to side balance
but if u have good balance then it will be like a rip stick (2 wheeled skate board with joint in middle) where halve the fun is mastering it

you talking about the wheel itself? i'm thinking i will get something like 2" OD round tube with a 1/8" wall. then i will bring it to a local shop and have them roll it into a 4' OD ring. then i'm gonna cut a few bike tires, melt the ends together, and rivet them to the frame.

one thing i'm having trouble with is finding the rollers, i need em cheap!

p.s. i'm working on a sketch up, should finish it in a few days.

What about taking some cut up mountain bike wheels. Then try to rivit the rim part to your 2" round bar wheel. Not sure if you can get the right curves to fit the bar wheel though. You could use the original spoke holes for the rivits. Then try to figure out a intertube and tire. Maybe a tube/tire from and late1800's big front wheel bike. I see people making those big wheeled bikes.

Probably would not work for some reason. But I thought I would post my quick thinking out loud.

About balance? Could you make a mono wheel but have it have two wheels? Like a one wheel peel dual mono wheel. LOL

bighead- thats a good idea, worth thinking about, but i would need to figure out how to make a large tube and tire because i don't think they make the big wheeled bikes any more :D plus i cant find any replica parts.

fowler- that could work! just need to find a place to buy them, cheap.

How about covering the 2" pipe circle in tires? Instead of having inner tubes, just cover the pipe in rubber.

thats what i'm planning to do (thought i mentioned that) unless i find a better solution.

i just got an idea! i can buy some round nylon and make the rollers myself! hers the plan:
cut several 4"dia 2.25" wide pieces of nylon.
drill a 5/8" hole all the way through the center of each piece.
on each side drill a 1.375" dia by 7/16" deep hole.
insert 1/2" bearings in holes.
setup a clamp holding a bolt that the bearings and nylon wheel can slide over, then rotate on.
position clamp under drill press (with a 2" fostner bit in the chuck).
then stop the nylon wheel from rotating and bring the bit down, and lock the depth.
finally slowly rotate the wheel a few rotations.

and boom! i got one of these w/ half inch bearings! (i would bet two 1/2" bolts would be enough to hold me, or should i go for 5/8"?

p.s. i did download the emachineshop program, and its pretty cool. i will consider it if i ever need something machined.

EDIT: i didn't get a price quote, so i'm not sure how expensive it would be. but i know they would likely charge me a bit more than reasonable.

EDIT2: nylon is expensive!!!!!!

EDIT3: maybe i could just use 2 skate board wheels assembled in a V shape?

idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! woa.

i like the skate board wheel idea, and in V shape thats exactly what im imagining.

how about use a giant metal ring (tube) and just have no treads? for the sake of time? i know it might be rough... but keep it under 10mph and you should be fine.

i don't think bear metal on the road with sand all over it, while learning to ride a mono wheel is the best idea :D. i think i will just put in the extra cash/time to rivet some tires up.

only problem with skate board wheels is that they would need some stronggg brackets, and it might make it impossible to remove the wheel from the frame.

well so far i think its the best option tho... this project really stumps me.

you also need to figure out how to connect a drive shaft

drive shaft, i was thinking a pocket bike wheel or something that was pressed against the wheel by a spring or turnbuckle. this project stumps me to, but i like a challenge :D!

score! my new best friend is polyethylene! a quick look on Wikipedia tells me it should work for rollers, and a 27 bucks for a 4" dia 1ft long chunk i can afford it! looks like i got the rollers sorted out!

Could you drill a hole in it, attach it to a drill with a bolt, put the drill chuck in a vise and machine with a file the "c" shape?

thats a good idea, i would need to make sure the bolt was held on to the plastic very well, but don't you think the method i mentioned above would be a little more precise, and maybe easier? also is there such with as a 1/2" ID 2" OD bearing? if there i i could save some good cash!

also, i got a clutch today! i ordered it a month or two ago for 10 bucks, i was planning to use it on my min, min bike with a briggs 3.5hp but now i don't have a use for it unless i use an engine with a 5/8" crank for this project.

Hi,
Sorry I only just understood that. I think that should work ok, but I would take a little bit off at a time, instead of the whole depth.
