School Kids Build Race Car

I just saw a story about this on the news & was lucky enough to find a thread about it.

Around here, this sort of thing doesn't happen very often so it's big news!

I'm currently involved in something similar; a community project which involves bicycles.

People donate bikes, then we get kids (aged 11 - 17) who come in, pick a bike &, under our guidance, fix the bike to a safe & usable point. Once they finish they get to take the bike home.

It not only gives them a reliable mode of transport but teaches them some basic mechanical skills & gets them off the streets & away from possible gang activity.

that is great that you would take the time to teach kids. i wish i had someone to teach me about bikes when i was younger. i figured out the basics easy. i don't think i fully understood how to lace and straighten a rim until a year or 2 ago. before that point i was just swapping rims instead. by now i think i understand enough to fix almost anything. if you lived a lot closer i might have even had a couple bikes and lots of parts to donate.

The surrounding area has a high Arabic (mostly Muslim) population & most of the kids we deal with have problems at home; the kind of kids who would easily fall into gang life.
The main aim of the project is to prevent that before it happens & give them some skills they can expand on in the future.

I was the same. I've always had an interst in all things mechanical. I'd pull things apart to find out how they worked & put them back together just to prove I could

Yeah, there's 2 continents & an ocean in the way. I'm not sure they'd approve the travel But thanks for the offer
