i haven't really had any go kart crashes but one day when i was just cruising through fields on my dirt bike when i was crossing in to the next field on the fence line there was a big bump about 3 feet tall i was coming at it going about 30 mph i had already hit some jumps that day so i decided to see if i cold get air of this bump. when i hit it to my surprise there was a big pond behind it I flew in to it my buddy was behind me and was killing himself laughing. i gotta say it was pretty funny

I was flying around a trail in my back yard (with no brakes) I was driving along a fence and for some reason I veered toward the fence and cought it with my right front tire. Made it turn all the way over and completly stopped me. My whole body was sore, but I was able to drive away from it. Screwed up my steering rod though.

ok here is a noteworthy story......

Me and my friend were replacing our go karts engine from a 6hp to a 16hp.....when we got it all bolted down and wired the throttle we took it out on our driveway to give it a quick test (driveway is about 60ft long) My friend hopped in the front seat and told his dad to start it up. I he put the choke on and pulled the string......the second he took the choke off......the back wheels spun and off went the go kart......with my freind's dad being dragged across the lawn. the go kart probably got up to about 20mph or so but i somehow managed to cut across the lawn, get right behind the go kart, and flip the kill switch on the rear of the engine.............

The lesson......always make sure the butterfly on the carb actually is connected to the throttle.....

I know this is an old thread, but I have a good story. I was testing my throttle setup I had rigged up. At the time, the brakes weren't hooked.(forgot)and for the kill switch we had to wires that you had to hold together to kill the engine.(behind the seat). I know your thinking it was stupid to drive it in this, condition, we were eager because we had just bought the frame and put the engine on, and wanted to drive the thing. Anyways, long story short the kart took off, throttle wouldn't return, and my brother ended up smashing into a brick mailbox 1/4 of mile away. Dad was mad, to say the least.

Suzuki GSXR-1100 on the back wheel STRAIGHT up and pulling over all the way past 45 degrees and continuing. Hit the rear brake to smash the front wheel down and caught a wobble next to a car at about 80 mph. Bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce; and regained control. Whew, no roadrash that day!

A BRICK mailbox? Holy crap! Somebody wasn't fooling around!

Maybe they're just more common in my area but there's a few in my neighborhood. My neighbor also go tired of kids hitting his with cars and baseball bats so he dug down 4 feet and cemented in a 4x4 steel post and then had a 1/8" thick steel mailbox made. It is hefty and is incredibly solid.

These are good stories!

This one is more humorous than scary:

I had just built my first cart, and was anxious to go for a test run. I started it up (no brakes/no kill) and took off. The steering geometry was waaaay too quick, I could have burped and got sideways. I was headed for a tight spot between our swing-set and the drive shed - just enough room for the kart to fit through. I was really moving, and that; along with the 1/4 turn lock to lock steering the kart had - it was almost impossible to make small directional changes. I steered to avoid the swing set, went too far and was headed for the shed, panicked and over-corrected - now I was 6 feet from our jam packed plastic composter. There was no time, and no brakes, so I held on and blasted through that composter in an explosion of banana peels, coffee filters, and flying pieces of black plastic. The kart was undamaged, the composter was in thousand pieces spread over a 15 foot swath along with the contents there-of.

The wife was not pleased... :)

When I was a kid, (18 years or so ago) i put up two metal rods, with a wire tied between them for a start finish line. (they were only driven in about 4 inches) Every lap I made, the wire was lower because the rods were leaning towards one another. Last lap, the wire was neck level. It ripped the rods out, and I gasped for ten minutes...

Basically the most frightening experience on a kart was around 4 years ago, we had purchased a kart which was a small 1 seater Bird MFG kart with a GX120 equipped, the linkage was fairly non existent and the pedal really didn't do much either way. The kart simply gained in speed without control, it was defiantly something someone had rigged up not knowing what they had done... in our shop's complex we have several rows of buildings, if you looked from overhead it would look like the number 3 where you can only enter and exit from one side, the other has grass and a fence line. I clipped the fence sliding to a stop using the hand brake without much damage done but it was without a doubt something that made me feel like I was going to go straight through the fence.

Reading that you should know I've ridden some fairly quick karts, you have some level of control though despite the speed, this kart had no control period.
