It's been a while since I've posted in here, mainly because my kart has been working great (knock on wood)....the blue Honda clone has been a great alternative to the stock 5 HP B&S. The 30-series clutch is still eating belts, but not as bad as when I first got the kart.
Anyhow, when I got the kart it didn't have any seat belts. I debated for a while before deciding to spend the money on the proper, stock belts for it. I'm really hard on it and have never come close to flipping it, but you never know....
Well, my 10-year-old was out in the kart with a friend yesterday. I strapped them both in and tightened the shoulder harnesses really well. Not more than 3 minutes later, about a hundred yards away I see the kart's wheels pointed to the sky in a cloud of grass and dirt. I started running toward my son and his friend as the kart was teetering on its nose, with them hanging from the belts. It ever so slowly rocked back and slammed down onto all 4 wheels and rolled to a stop.
Both kids were fine. The belts made sure that they had stayed securely inside the protection of the roll bars as it rolled. They were laughing and carrying on when I finally reached them.
The wreck ended the fun for the day. The right rear tire got torn off the rim, and the rim is toast. The steering arm and linkage on the right front tire is all bent up, too.
It was a reminder that while these things seem like toys compared to "real" motorcycles and quads, they can still mess you up. If those kids have gotten tossed out of the kart it surely would have rolled over them.
I've got to spend some money on parts, but at least they're not hospital bills
