Run Time for new Build - Campground Cruiser III

Hey fellas,

I have been reading the stickies regarding watts/amps/etc... and I believe I have a good idea of what I want. So, I am listing my setup and calculations below... hoping to get feedback, whether it is good or bad.


Setup: 48V 1800 Watt motor/controller
*max of 33Amp

Weight of vehicle without me: 75-100lbs
Weight of vehicle with me: 275-300lbs


Desired Runtime: 3hrs
Batteries: (4) Mighty Max Battery 12V 35Ah Battery SLA/ AGM

Calculations:

1800 * 3 = 5400

3600 / .85 = 6352.94

6352.94/48 = 132.35 Amp Hours

35AH x 4 = 140AH

Battery needed: 35AH batteries




Am I way off with this? or am I on track? Anyone?

Everything sound pretty good.
...except "run time"

When (4) 12V 35AH batteries are connected in series
...it creates a 48V 35Ah battery pack

I've been thinking about this quite a bit over the past day or two. My expected speed is no more than 15mph. That's actually the max I am looking for. I am looking to use this vehicle at actual campgrounds when we go camping.

Thinking I should go with a 36V 500Watt... then if I get 3 50ah batteries... I should have at least 3 hours of run time.

So just a quick Q, did the campgrounds you frequent ban engine powered vehicles, or did something happen with the 2nd iteration of the Campground cruiser?

Good question kartorbust. Engine went out on the 2nd campground cruiser. Replacing with electric bc most of the places we take the rv, dont allow gas carts. The offroad parks are the only ones that it isnt a big deal. Figured while i was at it, i would build another one.

It's kinda weird but, from what I understand, lower voltage motors actually draw more amps to do the same job.
...something about they have to "do more with less" if that makes sense


IMO your better off with your original plan
...48V 1,800W brushless motor/controller (~$200.00)
or even a (1/2 price)
...48V 1,000W brushed motor/controller (~$100.00)

As for batteries, I have used (4) 12V 12AH SLA (sealed acid batteries) (~$100.00 & 40lbs.) with these type motors, many times
…& usually get 30 - 45 min. of steady "run time"

So, for ~3 hours "steady" you would probably need like (12) of them (~$300.00 & 120lbs.)
* Do you want/need a steady 3 hr. run time or more intermittent?

As an alternative maybe
...a 48V 45AH (45V Chevy Volt) lithium battery pack (~$500.00 but, only 45lbs.)

I have one on my ElMoto
…& it has an 8,000W motor
...weighs ~500lbs. with rider
...range ~40 miles

3hrs is a long time. Do you really plan on riding it for 25-45miles? If you only need a total of 10-15miles the 12ah batteries would probably be close and the 22ah batteries shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks for the input fellas. I should have clarified in my original post. When i said runtime of three hours, i was referring to intermittent. Not a steady run time. I would like to be able to use it multiple times a day to go to the pool and back and maybe a short cruise around the campground.

When i think about distance, 15 miles would be plenty... i would think.
