i am considering buying a rototiller with 2 speeds and reverse. would an engine with a gearbox be good for a kart?

If you had a way of clutching it, it might work. Do you have a picture of it? I had an old rototiller that did 2 speeds by running either one fanbelt pulley set or the other. Seemed kind of tough to adapt.

no i dont have any pics. i have just been thinking that reverse mite be nice for a project i mite buy. the project i am considering buying is actually very close to your trike i think. http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/rvs/886501391.html

in regards to the roto. i dont have any knowledge of how the gearbox works. is it a standard shaft that comes out of it. i just thot it mite be helpful if i were to buy this trike. any thots on my plans?

WOW..... That is one unique trike! I hope you get it so that we can all get a closer look at it. It definitely looks light enough for a Blue Terror to get it going quickly.
As far as the tiller goes, I'd yank all of the useable hardware off of it (motor, pulleys, shafts, bearings, sprockets, etc.) but to be honest the drive system looks like the twin belt thing I had on my tiller. (I did get a lot of useful parts from it, though.)

Those B/S 8hp motors are incredibly torquey!
