roll bar

the wife says i need to add a roll bar and harness to the boys new to him kart.
it is a basic 3.5 hp old school kart.
what material are people useing?
schedual 40 pipe seems to heavy?
any other advise?

hey Chris, some common tubing is 1.25" down to 3/4" depending on the kart. If its a small thing then 3/4 would work . I have seen wall thicknesses from .065 on up to .100. The higher in number, the thicker it is ( for example .125 is 1/8" ... that is way to thick to be used on a small kart for the roll bars )
I would say probably 7/8" round tubing that is .083 wall thickness that should work great and be light enough.

If I may add to the above- don't JUST make a hoop. In a roll, it will just fold. Be sure do add some supports to it.

And, don't use one without the other. Harness and hoop, or no harness and no hoop.
