Robin Subaru

Hey guys,
Ive just joined this site after lurking around for a while. I have a Subaru ex21 motor on my Manco Dingo. I think its a great engine but am looking for a little more power. I have bought a UNI filter and barely advanced the timing. I wanted to know if anyone has any suggestions or knows anybody who does work with these. Im at a lack of things I want to do while keeping this engine as reliable as it is.Thanks for any help!

governor removal is the most common mod done to kart engine
custom header is a cheapish way to get a bit extra power

Thanks! We have been trying to find a way to trick the gov.in letting the engine rev higher but not to the point it will blow from me never letting off. I want to rev it to 4500 rpm and Ill be with that. I haven't been wanting to mess with the exhaust because it needs to be quiet for where we ride. If noise wasnt such an issue that would have been my first mod.

I have an exhaust from a promo chopper I got for free. If they line up right do you think Id see a gain with this? Its hard to see in this pic but its just a normal dirtbike exhaust. Its coming of a 125cc engine.

EASY!

Remove/Bypass Governor, and limit throttle travel to limit RPM.

However the BEST way, is just to have NO limit so you get 5000RPM and listen to the engine. You can tell by ear if you are revving it too hard. Just don't be flooring your Go-Kart the whole time, instead drive it like a car, and floor it only as needed.

I don't know about the OHC Subaru's at High RPM, but my OHV Honda Clone takes 5000RPM just fine, so IMO you have no worry. I'm pretty sure your more modern-designed OHC Subaru can take the high revs.

(I'm wondering if one of these OHC Subaru's can actually outrev a Honda Clone, being a different valvetrain.)

I was told that the flywheel wont hold up over 5500 rpm. I talked to a guy who races these engines. Im most likely going to get some HP valves and springs and maybe advance the timing some more. That, with the air filter should hopefully get me a little more power. And maybe an aluminum flywheel and billet rod for more endurance in time. It's all going to be a slow process with my dad teaching me how to do this work!

you sound smart enough to handle the kart with no governor...... you can over rev the piss out of dirtbikes and cars you just know not to. I removed mine off a 3.5hp and was like holy shizam

I'd love to have one of those Robin engines to mess with. They seem like they'd have a lot of potential.

In my experience with Robins, they are amongst the most reliable engines on the market. If they were cloned, and race parts made, I honestly believe the GX200 would be rendered obsolete.

i wouldnt change the springs, as they're a second form of governing the speed

Yeah its a great engine, but somebody really needs to start with some aftermarket stuff for them! I believe its capable of 10hp without a new cam etc and just like intake and exhaust stuff. The cam is whats supposed to be holding it back.
