I killed my angle grinder yesterday, and decided i would buy a good one. I found a Dewalt and a rigid in the same price range, size and almost the same specs. I would take the dewalt without thinking, but then i saw the "lifetime service agreement" with rigid tools, looked it up and found out that they claim to replace any wearable parts in your tool for life (motor, brushes, gears, bearings, bushings, brushes, etc). Im wondering first of all, are rigid tools any good? and second is this lifetime service agreement for real or will it be a pain in the *** to get the parts when the time comes.

I have several rigid tools and my answer as to quality is "it depends". Some of their motorized tools are really good quality (mid to higher priced miter saws for example) and others are not (some of the lower priced electric drills for example).

I think, as with most brands, if you buy the very bottom of the line, you're going to get a minimalistic, use once in a while kind of tool.

I do like Rigid tools far greater than how I feel about Harbor Freight. I bought a 4-1/2" angle grinder from HF and using it almost daily killed it in about a week. HF would replace it, but only after I ship it to their main distribution/warranty service location and they'd eventually send me another one. Considering it was $9 on sale with a 35% off coupon they mailed me, I decided it wasn't worth the hassle of shipping. I have a Mikita that's reliable as can be. I wanted a second one so I didn't have to switch between cut-off wheels and flap-disks so much.

While I don't own a Rigid grinder I do have one of their shop-vac knock-offs, and I'm pleased with it. I use the exhaust outlet to assist in closing my pool each year. I also suck up metal chards and chips off my machines and the floor (and my shirt, pants and shoes), and I've also used it for automotive purposes - after spraying a hot engine with degreaser, I've used this vaccum to suck off all the gooey engine dirt. It's sucked up soggy kitty litter, sand, leaves, water, car fluids, metal chips, spilled paint and mineral spirits, sawdust, cigarette butts and ashes, ash from the fireplace (after it's cooled down of course), knocked over cans of screws and nuts, drywall screws, etc.

So far so good.

I also have a rigid disc/belt sander station, and the thing eats the internal timing belt like you woulnd't believe, leaving the sanding belt unpowered. Rigid has replaced that belt (free of charge) no less than eight times by now, and it's not that much of a pain. I simply write to them using the form included with the machine (well, a photo copy) and send them the snapped belt and they happily send me a new one. My only complaint is the entire process takes about a month - from me breaking the belt to getting a new one. The stores that sell the units do not seem to service Rigid directly, mail order only.

Well the rigid and Dewalt 4 1/2" angle grinders are both the same price ($90). I have used a Dewalt before and like it a lot, but i use my angle grinder just about every time I'm out in the shop for cutting and grinding, and the lifetime service agreement seems great. The Dewalt has a 10 amp motor, and the rigid has either an 8 or 10 (it says both). Im not sure how much of a power difference two amps is.

Heres the Dewalt

And the Rigid im considering

Thanks for the quick answer.

I know the Dewalt is a nice grinder, i may just get that...but the Rigid's service agreement is just so tempting. I'll go to home depot soon and check them both out. Either one will be a major step up from my current 3.8 amp "speed way" grinder.

Yeah, well, I knew when I picked up the box it was likely to be a piece of ****. However, for $9 I couldn't resist. Some of the things they sell is utter crap (like this $9 angle grinder) and other things (like my milling machine and full HSS tap set) are nice, above average quality compared to other imported tooling. I don't think anything they sell is better than quality American-made tooling however I'm not going to spend $299 for a set of end mills when HF sells the imported version for $49.95. They get chewed up anyway.

I cant say too awefull much for rigid but my boss buys alot of rigid and i use them they seem pretty good. He has a big 12" sliding miter saw and a battery drill and two roofing nailers. As for grinders the first one i had was a porter cable that lasted 3 or 4 years and worked great but i burned it up doing something stupid. Then i got a milwaukee and use it almost daily for 6 years or so its starting to take a beating iv replaced alot of the parts on it with ones from a burnt up milwaukee my freind gave me. He bought a dewalt and is happy with it thus far. I think as long as you buy a decent name brand and arnt too hard on it youll get your moneys worth out of it for sure

I recently bought a really cheap hitachi angle grinder off amazon.com. i wasnt expecting a whole lot, as it was $40, came with a case AND five cut-off wheels, and free shipping, but the first day I got it, I ran it for 30 minutes straight under a really heavy load, and it hardly bogged down at all! however the next day i was using it in a tight space for about 10 minutes, when i realized i was covering the air vents on it. it smelled like it was burning and lost some power, so I turned it off and let it cool down for 10 minutes...good as new!

as for rigid, i had a router from them, and it burned out.
