Well Gene from Agrisupply responded to my question about load and rpms for that gear box:

"This gear box is made for a fertilizer spreader and will not handle this kind of r p m., it is a 540 max. r p m."

Bummer.
Hmmm. I wonder though, If you used a 3600 Governed engine and geared 6:1... Then you are turning that gear box only 600 Rpm.
I dunno those Guys on "Cars and Cameras" used it.

yah good info. i was planning on gearing down before the diff. So maybe i need to get down to 7:1 maybe? i don't think i want to go 27 mph in this thing. more like 20 mph? maybe even 15 mph? will need to calculate that out.

anyways here is an updated CAD drawing. Guesstimated my best on engine size so i can get an idea. Will need to go back and measure mounting holes etc.... but that can be done on the fly. This cad is more to see if it makes sense and if i'm missing something.

This is done in pro/e with mechanism so i can animate it if needed. Takes some extra effort putting together that way. but it looks cool.

What do you guys think about vertical shaft engine with Chain Or Pulley? My first concern with pulley is i need to design this so i can change it, which is currently a design pain. i think i can design around it. but maybe chain is better and i wont have to worry about how to replace if it breaks later.

What is everyone's experience with a chain drive system on its side like this. See above post for engine to pulley orientation.

Better to do pulley or chain?

Yah im still searching. I may go with the one cars and cameras use on there kart. If i go 6:1 ratio first then through gear should be okay. Maybe even 7:1 , 8:1
