My favorite rifle would be my Light Sporter Ruger No. 1 in .270 Win. Its a pretty awesome little rifle with a hell of a cartridge. .270 Win really zips out there.
I have always been rather fond of the old school Ruger .44 Carbine, 4 rounds of .44 magnum in the tube, plus one in the pipe! If you thought the .44 was a badass round in a handgun, try it in a 18.5" barrel with loads that take advantage of the extra foot. To top it all off, it looks just like a ruger 10/22. My old man has one and an uncontrollable grin crawls across my face whenever I pick it up.
my fav rifle would have to be my brothers ar-15 its a panther arms its pretty nice! But one of my dream rifles to own would be a K-98 and a remington m-700 in .308 caliber.
i like my mav 88 with overfolder stock and my '42 mosin (moy-sin). the russian surplus rounds are powerful i guess, 1/4" steel at 25yds? the winchester repeaters are nice, so are the .50 sniper rifles. my cousin told me he was hunting with a rem. 700 shot at a silhouette some 300yds off. he saw it drop and investigated. he said the deer's heart was outside of it's chest and the animal was wasted. the mosin is said to be nearly on par with the rem.. but when a rem. costs say 7 times what a mosin does, i can buy 3,000 rounds to go with it.
how so? the mosin has been around since 1891, has a range of nearly 2.5miles if i remember right and is .30. the surplus rounds are corrosive, but that is easy enough to deal with. the dragunov sniper is a modified mosin. whoops, it was a 300 mag my cousin was shooting.
The bullet may fly 2.5 miles but the accuracy is only to about 200 yards with surplus ammo. The ammo is usually loaded uneven. Thus decreasing accuracy even farther. Also the fact that a gun is old doesn't mean its good. Mosins were cranked out as fast as possible during war time. Almost all Mosins have seen battle and have been counter bored.
The dragunov sniper isn't a modified mosin. Not even close. Even know it uses the same round.
300 mag is a great round.
I do infact own a mosin 1942 M30. Its been sporterized. I never shoot surplus ammo in it only good S and B brass.
I love shooting it, but the 700 comes in many different calibers and has way better quality.
Just keep in mind that surplus ammo is corrosive as **** and after shooting the gun needs an immediate cleaning with #9, Windex, or hot water, treat it like black powder.
the reason for such short range is a worn barrel. they recommend slugging the barrel to see if 7.62 is still usable or whether the barrel requires a larger caliber.
I've always been partial to the Winchester model 94 30-30 lever action. It was my grandpas gun and for big game hunting in Michigan it's about all I really need. For plinking I really love shooting my Marlin 925M with the bipod and varmint scope. Shotgun would be my old 1962 JC Higgins pump 12 ga with the ported poly choke. To each his own, there are so many cool guns, no need to show the love to just one!
