How much of an old riding lawn mower? I am thinking tires, engine, pedals, sterring wheel.........

Has anyone bought a riding mower and used the engine? They are vertical shaft engines...correct? Would it be a matter of just buying a right angle gear box?

Thanks

Could be that simple. I didn't use the vertical engine from the old rider I pillaged for my kids' kart. I did use the rear axle (with diff) rear wheels and tires, steering and spindles, front wheels, and a few other bits. I got an F-N-R gearbox with it that originally served as a RAGB, but with the new horizontal engine it didn't look doable. Plus, I wasn't sure it was up to the task. So I put a centrifugal clutch on the engine, and (with a jackshaft) chain to the factory rear axle sprocket.

If i were to buy a riding mower, i would do some simple mods to turn it into a "racing" mower. Assuming you found a fairly complete rider, just trade front and rear pulleys, remove the governer, and you got a fun backyard basher.
Also, when your looking for a mower, for kart parts or as a racer, take note of the transaxle its using. Generally, a peerless branded tranny is going to be a good base for projects.

Anyways, good luck!
