Hey just looking for some insight on adding reverse to my R1 buggy I'm building. I've seen the premade reverse setups but I'm not spending 1800$ on one.

Gearboxes, multiple forward's and/or reverse, aren't cheap... Or they're crap....
Now they range in price, a number have been mentioned around $500(I faintly recall), to really expensive...
Overall, no easy way around it...

Somebody once suggested using an electric starter motor for reverse.

I have said that a few times... Kinda forgot about this method.
Some 4wd buggy drivers have an electric reverse setup... I'm not entirely sure why, but I think it's a transmission issue...
They Use a starter and a flywheel on the diff...

It's a transmission issue. F/R gearboxes that can handle 100 or more horses tend to be very expensive, heavy and hard to come by. Since bike engines already typically have 6+ gears it would be redundant and excessively heavy. The starter motor type reverse is simple and inexpensive, and enough to back down off a trailer or out of a bad corner.

Some of the bigger bikes out there, such as a Goldwing I think, have a reverse using the starter motor.
It'd be kinda dumb to lug around a battery and starter motor just to back up.

If that R1 motor is a 2 stroke with electric start it can be Jerry Rigged to run backwards. Most 2 stroke motors will run in the opposite direction there for giving you reverse.. I don't know what a R1 motor is but is sounds like and looks like a two stroke to me..

Yeah 2 strokes will run either direction, but that's not exactly the approach you want to use for adding reverse to a buggy.
Reverse rotation used to be a big problem for old tractors with 2 stroke diesels. If you stall out climbing a hill in too high a gear and don't get the clutch in quick enough, the engine will reverse rotation and send you flying down the hill backwards.
R1 as in Yamaha R1! (YZF-R1 that is)
a one liter (998cc) four stroke engine with up to 200 hp (yes, twohundred indeed)
on a bike weighing less than 200kg (440 lbs)
yamaha managed to make a bike with one horse per kg (and put some horses on top over the years)
great bike, feels like you kicked in warp drive if you turn that throttle too eagerly
aaaanyways, nooo not a 2 stroke.

just mount a sprocket to it, get it in contact with the chain (not the direction of the 1way clutch of course!)
and hook up a battery with a switch and you'd basically be done.

Yeah I've heard of the started methid and was thinking about it. Just don't want to end up in a get out and push this 1000lb kart backwards situation if it can be avoided. The starter thing doesn't look too bad so maybe I'll go that route.
